The first picture is of a resonator it is kind of cool. You pluck one golf ball and the other one (of the same length) begins to osculate. The four others do not “hear” those two because they vibrate at different frequencies. The two short ones are cool because you can see the energy get transferred back and forth, meaning when one stops, the other starts. Back and forth they go. So I have 5 dollars in steel and a few bucks in golf balls. They sell nicer ones for $100 in the science catalogs. I’m sure they work better but at a savings of $95 I will take my cheap version.The second picture is a two ball drop. Here is the concept gravity accelerates everything (minus a parachute) at a rate of 9.8 m/s/s. I release the ball at the top of the ramp and it kisses (knocks lightly) the other ball off. The ball that was accelerating down the ramp travels 5-6 feet in the air away from the ramp before it hits the ground. The ball that was nudged off the stand falls pretty much straight down, yet they both hit at the same time.So if you shoot a 30-06 rifle level to the ground and drop a bullet at the same time they hit at the same time. One bullet lands next to you the other ¼ mile down field. Kind of cool Attached Images

Reply:i'm takin a physics class now, and we've already gone over that, i thought that lesson was cooler than most.  another example was soem college students went to the auditorium and rigged up a potato gun or somethingthat was pointed in line with a teddy bear hanging from the ceiling.  when the gun was shot the teddy bear dropped and they would always meet.
Reply:fishon91That is a classic. It is often called "shot the monkey". One of my favorites.Craig in DenverI just drilled a hole in it and pushed it on.The diameter is 3/16 mild steel. Spring steel is what works best but I can not find it.

Reply:I drilled too deep in a old ball and it shot nasty *** water in my mouth. Scared the hell out of me. When I was a kid (I'm 46) I used to tear apart my dads tore up g. balls to see how they made them.
Reply:Hey Reebs,How long are the posts for the golf balls?  Does it matter?  I like the idea of one starting when the other stops.  I would think also, that longer posts will vibrate for a longer amount of time.My dad would love that, so I need to make him one.  Any hints on lengths would be appreciated.  I assume it doesn't matter, and if that is the case, then cool.Thanks in advance.
Reply:I will measure it tonight. I do not want to mis lead you the one does not come to a complete stop. You have to watch is closely. I do not want you to make it and be disappointed. Plus it works much better if you hold it in you hand in th middle.
