Hi all-Currently I'm working toward a master's degree in Material Science Engineering. This semester I am taking a course in Physical Principles of Characterization of Materials. Basically we study different methods used to study, view, and characterize materials on the nano and atomic level. During my last lecture my professor began discussing STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscopy) with us. Below is an image of the Tungsten tip used by an STM machine. The tip's can be 1 micron (.000001) in length and 50 nanometer's (50E-9) in diameter !The tip is formed so precise that single atoms will jump from the end to the work surface.......... How would you like to be able to grind your tungsten to that degree ! Ha !-Graham-Mechanical EngineerAutosport Mechanic/Fabricator
Reply:Thats amazing, thats 3 hundred thoasandths of an inch long, and 1 millionth of an inch in diameter eek! Talk about precision. Im in school now for Electro-Mechanical Engineering, I hope to work on things like that.
Reply:cool, since I am just learning how to grind the darn things on a bench grinder
Reply:Ok, whats a stm machine and why is it using a tungsten electrode? How was the shaping of the point achieved?Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:What level of amps and volts? If electrons jump a gap, is that technically an arc?Is this in an inert gas or a vacuum?
Reply:WOW! How long does it take to do a scan? Must have several of those so that it can do brush strokes over the material being scanned? Very cool. Maybe that chemical sharpner we can get as welders will give us that sharp of a tip.. Interesting. Reply:Roger, affirmative all all that other rot.. Very cool stuff, we didnt do any of that at my college (electronics), but I used to ooo and ahh over the pics generated by those things.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last. |
