No matter what I do, I always end up with slag or flux dirt around the nozzle of my MIG Gun.  What can I do to prevent this from happening?
Reply:Have you tried nozzle dip?
Reply:Splatter on a MIG nozzle is apparently a fact of life.  MIG owners manuals usually recommend cleaning the nozzle after some period of operation to remove the splatter.   Depending on your machine, the current and wire speed can sometimes be adjusted to minimize how much splatter occurs.  Cleaning the weld area well minimizes splatter.  The tapered tips of MIG pliers can be used to scape the annulus between the contact tip and the outer cone.  Several companies make nozzle dips and sprays that coat the nozzle surfaces to make them easier to clean.  Don't know of anything that prevents it from getting on the nozzle.TeddCoHTP Microcut 400 & Invertig 160DC  Smith Dual Guard MD-510 OA Rig  Lincoln SP135+  Hobart Stickmate LX 235/160
Reply:I use nozzle goop and it works well. Bought a plastic can, probably 12 - 15 oz. for $5.00.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:Theyve also got a teflon based spray kinda like sailkote to help keep it clean once it is clean.  Dont know if it helps, and I dont MIG, but I seen it...Airgas had it.ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!
Reply:I was looking at a 16oz and the contents say that the only thing other than blue dye is USP petrolatum (CAS# 8009-03-08) what ever that is. I originally thought it was like Vaseline but re-read the label "Petrolatum". I'll have to see what that is.

Reply:Look on the jar of Vaseline--"USP Pure White Petrolatum" = petroleum jelly = Vaseline
Reply:So if you can use Vasoline how do you apply it to the gun. Do you take the nozzle off and put a thin coating on anything brass or copper?
Reply:I've always taken my nozzle off and scraped it around the corner of the table.  It takes about 5 seconds.  I've always wondered what makes the goops worth it.  I only need to do it every hour or so when in production.
Reply:I usually use my fingers (with gloves on) to knock the splatter off after every couple of welds. Works quite well. Ive also seen many guys use a big nasty tub of Vaseline.
Reply:Buy the can of dip, it will last for ever.  Once your gun is good and hot, clean it and dip it in good.  let the stuff drip off, run the wire out a little and clip that.  Weld away.  One dip lasts a while.  If Its not hot enough, I dip it and pull the trigger when I remove it from the stuff so the gas blows the stuff out of the inside of the cone.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have two kinds of reamers   they work well, and also use the goop too.  Habit now I just keep em both close and usually use them simultaneously. weld it like you own it

Reply:The only thing I can add, its important when using the goop to weld on a piece of scrap for a few seconds after dipping.  The dip does work very well.  It helps prevent a short circuit if your buildup gets out of hand.  The grease in the goop just keeps the slag from attaching to the torch.  Brian MoyerMoyer Welding & Fabrication       LaSalle MI

Reply:The only way I know to keep the spatter off the nozzle is to SPRAY Transfer, this is only good on thick materials as you run hot to get to spray.Just my .02BrettBrett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.
