So, after 2 months we finially have the sign up and running.  We were contracted to do the structural welding and ended up overseeing the whole project.   The sign was erected while the old one was still standing.  It was a real bear tearing down the old one with the new one in the way.  The new one specs out at 54' tall and about 27' wide.  We put 30" pipe 13' down in the ground with 7' sticking out.  That was then welded to a 18" pipe with 1/2" plates to adapt to the 30" pipe.  Unfortunately I dont have any pictures of the welds, but I have tons of the sign.  The screens on the new sign are 10' x 18' and ran 200k.  The whole sign was pretty spendy... Reply:That's a pretty big one! Did you guys fabricate the whole sign, or just do the erection? Those LED message centers are HUGE! I've never dealt with any quite that big. Nice looking sign! Reply:The 18" pipes had plates that had an ID for the 18" and an OD for the ID of the 30" pipes.  There were 3 plates at about 16" apart. The top plate was slightly larger so it wouldnt fall in and that is where they called out for 1/4" fillet.  Then at 4 points I cut access for plug welds in the 30" pipe.  I would scan the print, but our scanner is lost in the network somewhere.  We only erected the main parts of the sign.  It would have been nice to be in on the fabrication part of things.  There have been talks about another one going up on the coast and we would have control of the project.  The aluminum sections of it would be outsourced.  Oh yeah, the LED screens are 8mm (actually larger, but it's a new diaginal type so they can pull off the apearance of a smaller dot pitch).Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:I forgot to mention that we kept the old display message center.  It measures 13' x 2' x apporx 4' tall.  It was setup for telephone control and has 4224 lamps.. I can make a smokin' deal on it. Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
