Im working on stitching up a gas tank and I left a little too much on 2 sides, so Im wondering how I can finish it up without it blowing through...see picsLincoln 135 settings B 2.5
Reply:I do a tack weld on one piece then a second tack on the other piece, the second tack should connect the two tacks together. Continue doing this all the way down the joint. I would make sure the heat is set right so you get good penetration so you can grind the weld down without making the weld to thin.Curious as to why you cut the fill neck out.Cool looking tank.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:I cut it out and flipped it, its a frisco mount tank, so by flipping it, it moved the filler neck closer to the top, thereby giving me a little more gas!
Reply:heres the bike right now
Reply:Your gonna have to turn your machine down and be real steady on the fill. Maybe build up one edge.  What size wire is in the machine now?  Id go thin thin, .023.Or, you can cut the welds and reposition the piece again (from the pic, looks like it shifted on you).  Neithers gonna be real easy.  Some of the other fellas might have a better idea, stick around.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:Here is your piece, as Jam stated, work from both sides then you can "bridge the gap" The arrow shows the 3rd tack in the middle. Nice looking bike, did you order the frame? What motor ? Keep us updated, Jam and I are thinking of building our own bikes from the frame plans on chopper forum. Reply:Nope, chopped the frame, the under part is still the stock '71 sportster. cut off the downtubes and the backbone and had new tube with some stretch and rake in the neck.I got it all together and grinded down, I think it came out okto the guys who are thinking of building a bike, check these forums out:www.clubchopper.comwww.jockeyjournal.comwww.chopperweb.netIts alot of work, but if you guys have any questions dont hesitate to ask
Reply:Yep - there you go, looks good. Geesh, did you just run out and hit that with the welder after we posted? Some fast work!  Unless you have a PC in your shop...like me. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:nah, took me about an hour to stich it up and grind it down, plus now the garage is trashed! gotta get the broom out and clean up before people come home!
Reply:Hey Micro, I re-read your post, building a frame is nice and all, but its much easier with inspection and title if you either chop an existing frame with a VIN, or order a frame with a MSO.then you can build everything else
Reply:Right, I was wondering how it's posssible to build a frame then get it registered and inspected. I'll have to check the forums and see what everyone is doing. Thanks for the info. !John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:If you have a business license, and are registered with SAE, you will have your World manufacturer identifier number (WMI). You can then order Manufacturer statements of origin (MSO)(MCO) and stamp your own vin numbers.I don't build bikes but I do build trailers. Since I have the certificates, I can apply them to motorcycles as well. Its easier to sell a custom bike if the title doesn't say homebuilt on it. The MSO's will cost, and there is a minimum to buy from most companies (25). You can get them at American Bank Note Company. I paid 180 plus shipping.Check the laws in your state. Good luck.Bill
Reply:Hughes - thanks for the great information. I have a business license but not sure how to get an SAE reg. You paid $180 for 25 MSO's ? That doesn't seem bad. If it's $180 each...then yikes! Thanks again.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
