First, Happy Easter to everyone.Second, here are a few pictures of the area that my son and I have prepared for us to work in. On view is the path to the work area past the storage shed. Another is the entrance to the shed, a third is our stuff in the shed, and the fourth is our welding table that we built together. The table is two 3/4 x 15" x 48" sheets. I used two 1/4" angle iron braces the legs are 30" long 2 x 2 x 1/4 square tubing. The welding area had a tree and dirt. My boy and I cleared the tree and dug our about three yards of dirt and graded the area. Then we moved about two yards of the pea gravel that you see. The table is sitting on four concrete deck footings (I call them that and always seem to find what I need at the store, let me know if that is not the correct name for them) burried about 2/3 into the dirt.We probably won't have time to play today, but hopefully this week or next weekend for sure. We are going to build a shelf underneath the table as our next project. I have an old bed frame that I am going to cut for the shelf frame and then use some left over redwood decking for the platform.Let me know what you think. Reply:Handy set-up you got there, well thought out a well put together. Always nice to near of the father / son projects, more than metal gets built. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Nice table, I would be getting some crush and run down on top of that pea gravel... You are not the only one who works in God's Garage...
Reply:Looks as good as anything.Keep a garden hose with a trigger nozzle handy when you use the cut saw, or when you're grinding.  That way you can mist down the fence and shed.  Grinder sparks are deadly when it comes to fires.Ask me how I know"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Oh, and Hey.....I saw the post about possible equipment purchases.  I think Ddog was figuring on REALLY PORTABLE WELDING.I'll bet you could get by with adding a Lincoln or Miller 225/125,150 AC-DC crackerbox.  A nice drop extension cord from the 220v outlet, and you're in business.  It would just about cover most of the bases, and it's reasonable.First project could be a cart with large pneumatic tires to make it easy to roll over the gravel and such.  I've been set up that way for years, and really haven't outgrown it"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Nice work space and table, I wish I had that much room outdoors. I'm working out of the front of my garage on the patio and I don't think that my neighbors are too happy about the sparks and noise. I work really early and so I do my grinding before they get home.  Sucks to be limited with my hobby, but I understand not everyone gets to have this much fun. It's great that you and your son can have this in common.  The only thing my son ever wanted to do was surf & skateboard. He had no interest in mechanical stuff where I was a gearhead from day one.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene

Reply:Looks like the start of a good shop.  I enjoy welding outdoors (in front of my garage "shop").  The light is usually better and the breeze keeps the fumes away.  The downside is your at the mercy of the weather and you have to be aware of passerbys.
Reply:I weld outside. Built an awning about 5m x 4m on the side of my shed. It's just a roof. So the side of the shed is one wall. The back gate is another wall. And I found some canvass blinds that someone was tossing out and they form the third and fourth walls - I roll them down when there is rain coming. Not having two walls makes it easy to wrangle long stuff.Scott

Reply:I like the idea of soft sides.   Role them up to get rid of fumes or drop them down for rain or wind or to keep kids from staring.  Great idea.  I need a roof.  It gets so hot here (no hotter than what you guys down south deal with) that I would love to have some shade.  Hopefully my next set of photos will have a roof to show off.
