I've been Tig welding for a few months now in school. I am on to a 3 layer weave. Only problem is I can't seem to get past it. My instructor tells me that my weave needs to be tighter and thats the only thing. I was wondering if any of you PROs could help me out by doing a 3 layer weave with no cup walk for me and posting a pic up of how it is truely supposed to be so I have something to base a finished result off of. Thanks

Reply:Sounds like your baking a cake.  Cant your instructor give you a demo?  Just curious.  I allways corner mine and make him do something Im having trouble with so I can see how its done.  Sometimes it makes me feel better watching him bugger up a weld   Could you be talking about doing a root pass, then a weave over the root?  that would sort of constitute a 3 layer..  Hmm.  Take a look at this and see if its what your trying to acomplish.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread...ghlight=stitchVarious GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:Gidday TofuGiven that I speak a slightly different technical jargon  language( Orstralian ) to most here, I am surmising that you are three layering on vee prepped pipe or plate and welding a:1.. a Root pass run2.. a Filler pass3..  a Capping runTo finish with a visually appealing and code worthy cap run it is necessary to get the preceding beads correct because :1..If you don't get enough peno in the root bead, the heat volume of the very much larger filller pass can cause suckback of the root run.Suck back is the contraction of the root pass to a point under parent metal wall thickness.2.. If there is not just the right amount ( readit as  height level below the prep edge) the can be either an overfill or under fill of the cap bead.3.. Trying to stretch the Cap bead in a lineal direction  an effort to gain fill over the overfilled second pass may give the appearance of the loose weave. If of course this is  in fact what we are talking about? My welding knowledge is ok but my ability to read minds sucks.  tells us more!  Materials, positions, thicknesses,  prep angle, wire sizes ,tungsten sizes, amps  set,  gas type, gas flow are clues the guys here, could use to assist you.If your instructor does not give adequate demonstrations he should not be an instructor in my opinion. My method as an instructor was to tell the class what we where doing, how and why, we where doing it, ask for questions, demonstrate the procedure ,ask for more questions and then wander around checking on individual practice and assist .Mind you if where talking ali here ( and you have not said what your'e welding ) ,I havent' got a clue?I hope this helpsGrahame

Reply:I am not sure if this is what you mean by 3 layer, but ...it is a weave.
Reply:Is this what your looking to acomplish?????...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks Zap and Airwolf that is exacltly what I am looking for just a few examples of what the end result is supposed to be. Thank you guys very much.

Reply:I believe Zap likes to call this a "stitch weld" ;however, I think I see it as like some others... in that this is a sort of "third pass"   Yes your building passes.Very good pics here weld it like you own it
Reply:there is a video on you tube doing this technique.
Reply:Nice video!  Very clear, good lighting, can actually see what's being done.

Reply:Zap, I got out of my chair and went and did a weld.  I don't get much opportunity to tig a heavier wall thickness, usually it's capped out with stick.  Thought I'd try one..    Not really done by the 'stitch method' that's been mentioned.  I'd call it more of a constant feed.  Pretty tough to keep a consistant pattern as I was more concerned about watching my edges.  Amazing how critical a camera picture can be.....4 inch sch 80 pipe....The weave averages about 1/2" wide.....3/32" filler at about 145 ampsWhoops...I'm stumbling around trying to post the pics.  Can you only do one pic per post?  Lets see what happens. Reply:Lookin' good..Its not easy keeping everything straight and even.. If I have multiple parts to run..I count my "dips" and try to do keep every part with the same amount..Try It!Thats the best way to get in "rythm" with the parts.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
