Welding mild steel 16 gauge, how much filler are you supposed to add? I've been just touching the filler rod to the puddle until a small drop comes off the rod. Is this correct or should I add more?
Reply:Heat, dab, move...heat, dab, move...yep. You have to use the correct size filler for the thickness of your material. What wire are you using?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:How much filler is needed depends on how the joint is prepared, how you want the weld to look when you are done, whether  you need full penetration, etc. Adding the filler should be done by dapping the end of th rod into the puddle as needed. This a) fills the weld out, and b) cools the puddle. You dab when needed. Heavy fill, dab more, Light fill, dab less. Withn limits, the surface can be kept fairly level even with infrequent dabs by how you drag the puddle.Using filler:On 1/16 steel butt weld needing full penetration, I'd leave maybe 1/32 gap, run at about 90A, and add filler to keep the puddle from burning through and bring the fill even with the top surface. A backer strip makes it a lot easier, but it isn't  that terribly tough without.
