I have a job to do on a Hardy wood boiler.  The fire box is rotted out along the ash line.  The fire box is 304, I called the manufacture to see if it was 304H,L or what it was, they couldn't't tell me, I was disappointed in that.  I'm assuming it's 304L, I have 308L 1/16 stick rods and 308L material to make the patching necessary to cover the rot.  I'll die check it when done, but my question is do they make 308L flux core wire?  It's outside and I was going to try and weld it with my pipeliner unless they make 308L flux core wire.  If they do, I think I'll use my generator and my wire feed to do it.  What do you guys think?
Reply:They make 308 FCAW wire, but do you want to buy a 30 lb spool when you could do the job with 5 lbs of stick?
Reply:The firebox is rotted out or burned out? Seems odd that SS would be rotted out. How old is the unit and is it used for home heating?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:It's really a wood stove that heats water that circulates through the floor for radiant heat or could be run through a coil for heat like a regular furnace.  Lots of company’s make them, this one just happens to be made by Hardy in Miss.  It's called a wood boiler, even though it doesn't make any pressure, it uses electric pumps to circulate the water.  The fire box if surrounded by a water jacket and the rot or corroded part of the fire box is right at the ash line. The stove is about 15 years old maybe a little older.  I think it's from leaving ashes in the stove in the off season and they got wet year after year causing it to pit and corrode, there are really just a million pin holes all around the ash line.  My buddy thinks like everyone else, stainless will never corrode, it last for ever.  It's a big heavy sob, and if we could get it inside I could tig it, but we can't.  I could move the tig outside and try and cover it, but I think it would be a bigger pain than using the pipeliner and 5 lbs. of rod.  I was just wondering about the flux core and Pulser answered that for me.  I called the local welding shop here and they don't carry any self shielding flux core stainless wire in any grade.
Reply:Hmm....one of those stoves almost killed/seriously injured me. Fun fun. If you're putting wood in one when the outside temp is above about 60*, keep the door closed if you have to walk a bit to the wood pile. Otherwise it gets too hot, and a geyser of steam/boiling water blows the vent pipe off the top and showers about a 12' circle with approx 25 gallons of said water/steam combo. Came short of getting me by about 2 feet. That would NOT have been pleasant.
