This is a new bed me and my guys built, now we're starting one for my 2007 Dodge 3500, I'll post some pics when it's finished. The reels were built by Kentex fabrications out of Texas, he's buildinga new set for my next bed, he does excellent work, his email is [email protected]. If you're looking for some reels he can custom build pretty much anything. Attached Images
Reply:1- Nice bed, 2-Dumb question What are the wing nuts for? Please don't burn me on this one guys !
Reply:They stuck there when the paint was still wet. Nice looking bed.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:The top ones are for 4.5 and 5" grinding disks. And the bottom ones are for 7 to 9" grinding disks.Lincoln 300 Vantage 2008300 Commander 1999SA250 1999SA200 1968Miller Syncrowave 200XMT350MPA/S-52E/xr-15Xtreme 12vs Millermatic 251 w/30A Millermatic 251 Dialarc 250 Hypertherm 1250 GEKA & Bantom Ironwokers
Reply:I was going to wait and maybe someone else would ask but I figured I'd give you all something to laugh about.
Reply:Good call itsgottabegreen. The vertical box in the 2nd pic is a torch box that will hold all my tips, my beveling torchs and all kinds of related crap. I used the base of an old vise and just made the manual hose reel on the back
Reply:That sure is nice.I didn't know what the wingnuts were for eitherLooks hot and dry there"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Very cool! Which way to Thunderdome?
Reply:Ya, I know, we do so many different things, I had to make it to where we could take it to a pipeline job, structural steel, bridges, handrail,etc... The market around here is so cut-throat if a guy can't do it all, he don't do at all.

Reply:I wish you had a closeup photo of the reels. Those look pretty sharp.
Reply:On those tool boxes, did you quarter some pipe to make the corners? That's pretty cool!
Reply:I'm with Bob Warner, let's see some close-ups of the fancy lead reels. You bragged on the guy, gave his email address, and didn't hardly show off the reels. I would like to see some more of the OA roll-up, too. I'm interested in the attached tool box. Good looking bed, functional, can't wait to see it on the truck.Last edited by gizzardgutz; 04-26-2009 at 10:57 PM.Reason: addOnly when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:thats really nice manComplete Fabrication Shop specializing in pipe fabrication. Also offering heavy steel fabrication and sheet metal work.
Reply:Sorry for the lack of reel shots guys. Ya, the corners are quartered 4" pipe. The one box with the expanded metal is for my pipe stands, and all those nuts in the O/A box are for my tips. I worked for my dad in east Texas when I was a kid and got the idea for the torch box from him. The last pic is of one I'm building for my 07 Dodge. We shot the entire bed and inside the boxes with Raptor bedliner kits (3) for a grand total of $325.00, and it turned out great. Attached Images
Reply:Looks good. Here is a picture of one I just got on the road this week. Attached Images
Reply:Nice work there,good job.
Reply:Thanks for the come back on the photos of the reels and the OA roll-up box. Those are some nice reels, but the OA box is what I'm interested in. I've been working around ideas for something similar for several years. The nuts for your tips is a good idea, and I'm assuming the pipe nipples in the bottom are for regulators, the washers to hang your torches. My OA roll-up hangs around the oxy bottle neck so I can remove it and lock it in the tool box at night, but I've been needing to add a tool box similar to yours for my mixing barrels, cutting heads and tips.. Maybe I can get past the "thinking" about it stage now! Fabulous bed, too!Last edited by gizzardgutz; 04-28-2009 at 11:23 PM.Reason: spOnly when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:man, pipeliners seem to compete for the title of coolest bed. simply awesome.plenty tough and union made.
Reply:WOW!! Extremely versatile bed & box that makes the best use of available space and incorporates into a design that compliments the truck. Reply:Finney, that is one nice bed. I have an 07 Dodge that we're building a bed for right now. There's no way that I would want to make this my only source of income, because there's alot of time and money that has to go into building a bed as nice as the one you have there, good job. If you get a chance, post some pics of the inside of the boxes, like how you did your doors and frames, I have a few ideas, but it's always nice to see how another craftsman does his stuff.
Reply:A couple questions if you don't mind. First is the torch storage box. When you populate it with your torch, can you post a photo? I am not bright enough to see the complete idea. Also, what keeps the lids closed on this and the other boxes? In addition, PAINT. How is this painted and with what type of paint? I was going to use epoxy paint on my trailer but heard it yellows. I wanted to use two colors of gray/dark gray to paint with but I am not a paint guy so I am not sure how or what to do. You paint (at least on the torch box) looks like it has something in it like sand. Please advise how you did the painting.
Reply:Bob,He said he used Raptor bedliner kits (spray or roll-on bedliner 'goop'). It's not really a "paint", but it is a coating. Usually it's kind of rubbery/plasticy and thick.Hot Az's welding bed looks pretty nice and all, but I'll bet that in the Arizona (the Az part, right?) sun the black bedliner coating sure IS hot Az hell! Epoxy paint turns yellow? Epoxy is usually one of the 'tougher' coatings around. The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...I missed the part where he said he used the Raptor. I like the way it looks, wonder if it comes in colors, will have to look them up.I am from Arizona and can tell you, it really does not matter what color something is, it will be hot. When I was in my early 20's I used to build houses and during breaks you had to guard your tools or someone would put them in the sun. In just 10-15 minutes of sitting in the sun, you could not touch them without getting burned. Although black would be pretty bad. But I live in Texas near Dallas and it is kinda warm here also.I was researching epoxy paints and read that they yellow because there is no UV protection in them.Maybe not all but I am not sure. I just want a long lasting paint that won't scratch off with every touch.
Reply:I've got Rhino liner sprayed in the bed of my 1/4 ton pickup. It's actually cooler to the touch than bare metal. I think this is because even though it's black/dark gray, it doesn't transfer the heat to your hands/knees as quickly as bare metal does. My problem is that the do-it-yourself kits I've seen didn't have the durability I was expecting, and the rhino liner or line-X people want a fortune to spray something as large as a welding bed. I asked about the flatbed on my 1 ton truck, and the guy at the Ziebart dealer(rhino liner) turned white bofore telling me it would probably be more than $2k... Reply:We were on a job in Phoenix last year and it averaged 115 for 8 days straight, with a high of 118, but since we work all over the state, during the winter we've worked up in Flagstaff and Show Low where it got down to -35 with the wind chill. Raptor also offers a kit that you can tint, but we're welders, not bodymen, so I opted for something simple. |
