Anyone do any OA welding anymore?  I know it's messy and costs a lot and is out dated and blah blah blah.  I just like to piddle.  I really liked doing it in school.  I have a ton of tips for my Smith and want to see if I can still do it.
Reply:I don't OA weld, used to at one point but I do a bit of different types of brazing._________________Chris
Reply:OA welding takes more skill then MIG and Stick, gut really gives you a feeling of success after you lay down a nice bead. I too used to do it, but am now sticking to STICK (no pun intended )
Reply:There was a time when all I had was a set of torches. I was pretty proud of them.  I could weld with them pretty well.  Its a great way to start.  Then I got a gasoline powered welder, then I got a wire feeder for it, then.....If you can weld with torches, tig is a total blast. DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I do it all of the time.  It was much cheaper for me to get started with as I was given a pair of tanks.  I also don't have 220v power available.  I use OA all of the time to make tools, repair my dirtbike, and repair my boat trailer.  It's actually a very versatile process.
Reply:I did this valet cabinet last Spring.  It was build using o/a and stick.  I built it on my trailer outside, so o/a was convient. I o/a welded all edges and corners most without adding filler. I got a job restoring some window muntins last winter.  I ended up having fabricate the Tee bar to make the muntins.  I tig welded for the first time since school about 10 years ago.  I thought wow this is cool,  I'll probably tig more often. Reply:Cool, I I'm gonna go put my #1 tip on, see what kind of sheet I have laying around.
Reply:I used to weld everything except heavyplate with o/a if you can weld with gas then tig comes easy, as thunderRobbo said earlier you get a great sense of sattisfaction, when you can do it right. I always used a no2 nozzle for light guage material. good luck and happy welding!!!
Reply:Here's a thread that has some stuff. I'm the same as you. I made a little 4x4 parts box one Saturday afternoon because I was bored.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=9198
Reply:O-A welding was the only thing I used to do - that and brazing. Gas used to be cheap and I didn't have a stick or a MIG. Now with my TIG/Stick/MIG capabilities, I save the O-A tanks for brazing, cutting and heating for bending. If you can do a good O-A weld, you are on your way as far as TIG technique. It's a very satisfying form of welding, too. Properly done, the welds are very pretty. I would recommend that everyone learn to do it, at least at first. Reply:Hello,I have just bought a O/A set up today. As an apprentice in the UK, gas welding was part of our training.I was told it is the most versatile of all the welding. I got into the O/A again because...I do not have 220 in my garage for a good mig welder.I race vintage m/c's and all the things I will be welding are thin in section and probably steel.I need to be able to heat up/cut off/sweat on-off/bend/melt/thug-off   etc etc... with vintage bikes.Plus, I could light the Bar-b-que with the torch as wellCheers, shed dwellerLast edited by Shed_Dweller; 04-12-2007 at 06:29 PM.
Reply:I'll agree to just about everything posted above but messy. Grinding is messy, O/A is very relaxing to me. I enjoy it every time I can justify it over some form of electric welding.
