Don't know what I did, probably just boogered up the threads from having to clean my tungsten so much. But, I can see a single thread that is cross threaded in my tig torch. It's a PTA-17 that goes to a Lincoln Precision TIG 225. I'd like to just run a tap through it and clean them up since the cap screws in over half way and then catches. Best I can tell, it's a 3/8" diameter with 32 pitch. Or it might be a 10mm-0.8. Seems ultra fine threaded. But, I can't find a tap for this. Am I going to need to buy a new torch? Any suggestions?
Reply:I overheated a WP-9 torch on some aluminum with my Squarewave Tig 175. I went to my local welding supply and ordered a new torch head from Weldcraft and was back in business for about $30 (give or take a few dollars).KevinHobart Handler 210Tweco Fabricator 181iLincoln Squarewave Tig 175
Reply:If the threads are messed up, I would just buy a new torch body. You can buy them for about $30. I messed up my threads by cranking on the cap and had to buy a new one myself. If all the threads don't catch. you may not get a good seal and that will cause problems.kidtigger24 They think Im crazy, but I know better. It is not I who am crazy. It is I who am MAD!
Reply:You're right, it's a 3/8-32 bolt thread. You can get a tap from mscdirect.com, #65062226 for around $14. Had a similar situation myself. Now I keep a tap in the drawer. I believe you'll find that the threads are continuous all the way through the torch head, so just start tapping from the good end.

Reply:your going to want a chaser tap, not a cutter tap. You dont want to cut new threads just straighten out and clean up the old ones
Reply:They are usually done for. I just keep spare heads. Take a good look at anything you screwed INTO a damaged torch thread too. After working a welding school toolroom I don't spend extra for "quality" heads since they are still very easy to trash. I take care of the cheap ones I buy so they last long enough to be a good investment, but I don't miss them when one dies.
