what cfh would you recommend for shop welding 3"x3"x1/4" aluminum angle with 2% thORIATED w/argon? I'm using a shopmaster 300 set on ac @ about 180-200 amps and 15-20 cfh. sometimes when i start i get a bunch of black/ grey-black junk until the puddle clears up and gets smooth. its a pain in the rear to get it going. im using 3/32 tung, w/ 3/32 4043 filler. i do have a high freq. arc starter set on about 70% intensity and high frequecy on continuous. thanks
Reply:Everything you have stated is good..Maybe 25 more amps or so..Black yuck = not clean.. Stainless steel wire brush and acetone will make all that stop.. Do both sides as best as you can.. You'll see a drastic diffrence.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I agree with Zap, Probably dirty. I would use 5356 filler rod. The 4043 is very soft. I assume the 3x3 angle is 6061? If so, your heat may be alright, but I think that may be too much for that tungsten. I could be wrong, start with clean material and harder filler. Is the gas set to flow when you hit the pedal?Bill
Reply:my machine doesn't have the pedal, its got the finger control which i do not like.i just leave the amperage set on the panel of the machine and use the finger contol to turn on the contactor and gas. today I agree with the amperage being possibly too much fro the 3/32 tung. I backed down to about 150 amps from the 190 range i was at and it welded better. Zap, I cleaned both sides of the floor plate That I was welding to the angle( I'm building a short platform) and it welded great. gas is at 30cfh. thanks.
Reply:Clean is mean...glad it worked for you!John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:i usaully always hover around 20 cfh gas is expensive and wouldnt want you to wast it. also good before you start running a bead to surge you gas first so its already flowing before you start your arc |
