I am new here and have been reading thread after thread. I need recommendations for a welder. I will be doing welding on 3/16 tubing and 1/8 solid round bar and up. Should I invest in a oxy/acetylene or a welder with shielding gas? Any links would be a great help.Thanks.-Gary
Reply:3/16" Thick on the tubing?Hobart handler 210 or MM211Could probably get away with using a HH187- probably good prices on those since they have introduced the HH190Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:looking at his name Ed i would think he is referring to 3/16" diameter tubing. if that's the case i would go with O/A torch.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw
Reply:I was going to ask the same question. 3/16 wall thickness is much different from 3/16 hollow tube. Is this mild steel you are going to be welding? for anything above 1/8 thick material you will want a 220volt MIG welder. If you have not welded before, OA welding is more difficult and take lots of practice compared to MIG. it will also be much slower process.if you are welding thin material you are going to want to use OA or TIG preferably. for mig on very thin wall you will probably need a machine that will go very low with amps and volts and run .023 wire. we need to know more about what u are welding and how much welding you plan to doLast edited by soutthpaw; 08-29-2011 at 11:01 AM.Tiger Sales: AHP Distributor www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P, Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma. Reply:I build rcairboats and have been using harris safety silver 45 with a mapp torch. I use 3/16 brake line for the rigging, engine stand cage etc. I use rc airplane motors for power. I am at the point where I want to invest in a 110v welder or a oxy/ace setup. I will be using small metals 1/8 or less and tubing up to 1/4(brake line). Let me know what you guys recommend.

Reply:So what you guys think? 110v mig or oxy/acetylene?Thanks,-Gary
Reply:for brake-line you will still have your hands full using Migand O/A may work with small tip (just like soldering--more into brazing and welding now) and you can use larger tips for thicker materials i vote O/A torch set and practiceidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441

Reply:if you have oxy/ accet. torch i'd braze it silver solder is way to expensive
Reply:You could tack the welds with a 110v mig and .023 wire using 75/25 argon/CO2 shielding gas, (just to hold everything in place), then complete the joints with either the silver solder or braze. You will have to develop a light and quick touch for the tacking with the mig.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:I am working on a brass decorative project, different than what I usually do. As part of this project, I have found that I can TIG weld 1/8 inch brass rod with 1/16" low fuming brass filler rod. I have also been discovering the wonders of silver soldering, using jeweler's Easy-flo solder and a Smith Acetyelene Air torch. I am very impressed with silver solder, flows so nice and pretty strong. My question really relates to why one would want a tiny oxy-acetylene torch, given that silver solder works so well with acetylene-air. Or maybe the tiny oxy-acetylene torch is intended to substitute for the TIG torch that I usually weld with.I confess, also, to being unclear why the OP would want to upgrade from silver solder to welding. To me, the 110V MIG welders are basically for steel. I would think that steel would not be a great material for any kind of boat or aircraft. If the OP wants to weld aluminum, few people do that with oxy-acetylene, even though it can and has been done. Welding thin metal is a challenge with any welding process, as far as I can tell, making silver solder an attractive option. Another poster mentioned brazing, again a more forgiving process than welding. Of course, brazing would require oxy-fuel torches. (fuel could be MAPP, acetylene, or propane, as far as I know).About the only thing that I use my oxy-actylene torch for is heating.Any comments or clarification would be appreciated. I am probably missing something here.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:3/16" brake line tubing definitely sounds like a job for brazing or silver solder to me. The Smith Little Torch would be fine for that application, but so would a regular oxy-acetylene outfit with a #0 tip. I use a lot of Sil-Phos 15 for such work, but the SafetySilv 56 mentioned above would be a better color match for steel.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:i use to dragrace slot cars, we built the chassis with brass tubing and silver soldered them.. we used Weller soldering irons and I also had one of the small butane torches..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/ |
