But since I picked up a new camera this weekend thought I would try it out today. It will take me a few days to get everything for this job fabricated and installed. I will keep it updated as progress is made. These will be spiked rollers to attach to the back of a para-til. (large plow used for prepping row crop land) It will make more sense when i get closer to the end...First we start with some 3/8" plate and some 12" sch 40 pipe...Get the pipe cut to length and up on the stands...next i need some circles cut for the shaft assembly ...Then cut the center out to fit the 1 3/4" shaftI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:then I check the fit of my circles to my pipe. I can live with it. Next I fab up the shaft assembly.Load it in the pipe and weld the inside circles.and then the outside caps...Ran out of wire on this one so I capped it with 5/32 6013 at 150 ampsI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

A rock roller or rock rake as they call them up here?http://www.haybuster.com/hb/Rock_Pickers.htmlI used to build these and one thing we do differently on the shaft is we measure out and torch openings in the tubing so we can get a weld on the inner plates to the tubing as well. I don't know how much of a difference it makes or if it's just added security but I figured I'd let you know.Also you're cheating, there needs to be more teeth on it, I had the fun job of welding all the teeth on the rock rakes one year, a run of 100, welding each side of each tooth with FCAW is not fun.
Reply:Jackson,Having worked with those myself, you might want to add a small 2 inch gusset to either side of each tooth to prevent tear out when some one is turning sharply with the roller engaged in the ground.On the center bar supports, did you plug weld those supports in? I don't think it needs it, but would stiffen up the assembly.Nice and neat work...I like your saw over there...Got one just like it. Reply:no rock rake, They actually will be two rollers side by side that create a 21' swath. They act very much like a cultipacker, but will work in conjunction to the rest of the plow....A-Dab, that is a circle cutting jig I made to cut circles with a torch. I prefer it over all of the store bought units that I have seen, and it cuts accurate. I cut those circles out and there was no play around the shaft when I slid it in. Lug, We have tried the gussets, but they won't work in our dirt. The red clay that we have the gussets cause clay to build up and the rollers quit functioning as they should. Besides with the rig that these rollers are going behind it is gonna be impossible for them to turn sharp enough with it in the ground to break anything. KMC uses a roller very similar to this on there V-rippers now, and we originally were just gonna buy the rollers from them but they wanted about $3000 more for the 4 rollers than I could build them myself and still make a profit. Plus I would still have to modify them to work as we want them. So fabricating all of it was the option to go. There are five circles in the pipe supporting the shaft including the outside ones. The center is plug welded to the pipe, and the other two between the center and ends are welded from inside the pipe.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Oh, A-Dab. That is actually a sand floor where that roller is sitting. The stands are some I made. They have a 24" harrow disk welded to the bottom. You just can't tell it in the pics.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:well, things got real busy real quick with this job, but I found the pics of the end result and thought I would post them. This is what the cylinders were used for, and I had to fabricate everything from the plow frame back. The turn buckle mounts, brackets, etc... Well here is the end result.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Man,Nice freakin' cuts with the torch. I've picked stuff up from the local metal yard and it 'trips' me out how good those guys are with those things. I'd love to know how to cut out circles and shapes better than I do now... (I get lot's of blow-back).Nice work !/Jman....
