Did a little cut, snip, and blobbin' today.  Weather's finally cooperating. The disc job that's been stalled in the mud is finally on it's way againFirst pic.........   THIS DON'T BELONG HERESecond pic...........  This is the way it SHOULD BE.Third pic...........  Abandoned trying to do a patch job.  Might as well trash the running gear, and start over with a known quantity.  New wheels, tires, and spindles.  A little under 5 "C" notesFourth pic........ The offender prepped for surgeryFifth pic.....  Waiting for the seperation whack with a precision adjusterMORE TO COME Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Pic one...........  Post Partum depression  A  really messy cut job because there were empty cavities behind the welds, and a round axle.  Stuff blowing everywhere.Pic two.......   USE ONE OF THESE IF YOU'RE GONNA DO THIS.  This was a particularly dangerous cut.  You have no idea where the 02 stream will blow the metal.  It can blow back in your facePic three............  Mud daubed together.  Spent mucho time deciding how to short to stub the spindle.  It has to be in the correct position to ride in the furrow.  Nothing but artists rendition to go on, and some lookin' and thinkin'Pic four...........  The real 30,000 dollar question.  Is the furrow wheel where it's supposed to be?????????Pic five.... Reply:You have to admit Sam, that was an interesting use of that front axle spindle.Assuming the original broke off, do you think it would be advantageous to put a strongback on the new one?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:It appears to me you have the wheel about where it belongs. If not you could locate a wheel w/ the same bolt pattern w/ more or less center drop as needed.  I have to agree w/ Duane and suggest a strongback or two on the spindle. I don't doubt your welding, I just like to buy myself a little "insurance" when I find myself in situations like that. That spindle will have plenty of side thrust against it when the discs are in the dirt.                           MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I figure I'm gonna stick with the original design as built.  Ol' girl rolled outta the factory 70 years ago, and is still kickin'The axle is 1 3/4 cold roll, and the new spindle is made from a  2 /14 billet. The ductility of the weld is different than the parent metal, but over a very short distance.  One could equally call into question the integrety of the studs on the hub.  It's a matter of how far do you go??God knows how many years this implement was in the field with the strange spindle.  Probably bubblegumed with 6011.I guess I'm a purist.  If it works right, I want to sit back on the seat, look back, and think about this country in it's glory years when our stuff was sought out worldwide.  We used to, and still do, make some pretty good stuff. Now the burning question..............  How to fabricate the stuff to steer the axles.  There's no provision for attaching a steering mechanism on this machine.  I don't know if there ever was.  But common sense tells ya that the furrow wheels have to track in unison.  The land wheel is fixed according to the angle you want to work at.  My drawings in the manual show the mechanism for it, but the machine itself doesn't show any sign of there ever having been such a mechanism.  Might be this thing was built prior to 39', and the improvements weren't added till later.  But I gotta sneakin' suspicion that maybe it's less original than I think.I used to laugh at a signature that said " building something from nothing".  This is truly something from nothing.  Only drawings, and eyeballing to make it work."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Duane.... the original design was altered to put rubber tires on it instead of iron wheels.  I did talk to the 80 something man when he loaded it after the auction.  He was excited that someone wanted it for something other than scrap. He changed out the iron wheels so he could road it"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Poor choice of words.  Should have said "pushed" Hitler's boys back to Berlin.I still think back to what a CAN DO country this was during that period.  All ag equipment ran on iron wheels during the war.  Rubber was needed for military tires.I look at this old plow and think about the entire period in history.  We moved mountains to win the war, and pull ourselves out of the Great Depression.  This old iron was around for it all.  Pretty neat stuff. It was around when women started burning their brasWhen man landed on the moon. When LBJ picked his beagle up by it's earsIf it could only speak Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
