I am making a new rudder shaft for my sailboat. The shaft is 1" and it has a 1/4" piece of plate bronze welded to it over a 16" length. What is the preferred method for making this crucial structural weld? I have been on the site for a short while...great forum!

Reply:I met a guy at a boat show that tigged bronze propellers but he wouldn't tell me what filler, tungsten, machine settings or even the welder he was using, all he told me was he was using "a very good machine and it is a Miller". Sorry that i could give more advice.CharlesThunderbolt AC/DCRed Flames BWELincoln sp-135t

Reply:There are a few different types of Bronze alloys listed in Lincoln Electric's Arc Welding Handbook (Section 10). The preferred method of welding, polarity, shielding gas (if applicable) and filler metal depends on what type of bronze the base metal is composed of.If you can provide more details on the material, I can let you know what is recommended.
Reply:Go to www.ampcometal.com. They have all the info you need as far as filler metal, and processes.-------------john
