I have been asked to make a stainless steel box to go behind the cornerstone in a building. I am thinking it will be about 12 square and 4 thick. They want to be able to put paper in it. I would like to have your thoughts on what alloy, gauge and design. I am thinking I will make it like a shoe box, so it has a lid that just slips over, and then seal it on with silicon? I have done a lot of welding and fab work but i have never been around stainless, any thing i need to know?
Reply:Check these out for ideas. Looks like a common design is a cylinder with a sealed lid on one end. They may or may not realize there's a right and wrong way to do a time capsule. In general, you don't just throw a bunch of stuff in it and seal it.http://www.gaylord.com/adblock.asp?abid=10001http://store.heritagetimecapsules.co...Steel_c_8.htmlInteresting information about pre-existing chemicals, bacteria, etc. in the items being saved, that can cause decay issues even in a sealed container:http://www.timecapsulesinc.com/our-time-capsule.htmhttp://www.mnhs.org/preserve/conserv...imecapsule.pdfLast edited by Ruark; 09-02-2011 at 09:08 AM.
