I'm not very interested in a motor powered fume extractor but instead something like this http://www.harveyexhaust.com/Products/Reels.htm so im not breathing in exhaust fumes from the welder in the gargage, has anybody used something like this or would recommend something else? thanks
Reply:ummm...those are powered by a motor. No free energy here
Reply:oh, didn't see it say anything about having a motor i thought it was more or less got a retractable hose that would redirect the fumes else where such as outside threw a vent that you would be able to close and reopen manually depending if it was in use or not.
Reply:Are you running an engine welder -inside- a garage?  That's a big no-no.  Huge carbon monoxide danger there.I run my Miller engine welder outside underneath an awning (as a generator, but the principle is the same), and because it's fenced in on one side, it was setting off a CO detector in that space.  Since then I've done some creative things to plumb the exhaust up and over the awning.I've seen that setup at my local firehouse, so they can run the trucks inside.  It's pretty nice, but there is a powerful suction fan that pulls the exhaust out.  Without that, any exhaust that leaks can still poison you with CO.
Reply:ya, the first time i seen that was at the firehouse too i just wasn't sure how everything worked but seems like a good idea and wouldn't take up alot of space.
Reply:it is just a retractable hose that attaches to a fume extractor.  the extractor itself is basically a vacuum with a different flow/pressure design than a floor cleaning or shop vac.. A good one is very high volume, not a huge pressure difference.  a dust collection system can be dual purpose, but it will not be optimum, as a dust collection system is closer to a vacuum in that it needs volume and pressure to keep particles suspended for removal. Also remember, you need your shielding gas, so some times too much air removal wont work out.Personally, the few times I have stick welded in the garage with the big door cclosed, I used a box fan in the window blowing out about 3 feet away from me, with another window cracked to create an airflow away and out the window.miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
Reply:I was just planning on using a exhaust clamp and attaching the hose to the exhaust for the exhaust fumes.
Reply:OH! you mean an engine driven welder.. I missed that somehow. Use the aluminum dryer hose / bathroom vent hose.. It is cheap at home depot / lowes and  flexible so you can tuck it up out of the way when not in use.miller syncrowave 250hobart handler 140home made 400 amp engine driven in progress...
Reply:Put the welder outside!!. That dryer vent could melt and leak and unless you build a sealed exhaust system to the outside your going to have problems. A slip on system is no good. If your worried about the machine being outside then build an enclosure for it and lock it up but I dont think many people would steal a running machine outside an obviously occupied garage.
