This is nothing real big.  Just put together so I could have a long range reactive target to use for my .243.  It works really well.  Before everyone gets all "Safety" on me.  Notice how it does angle foward?  It puts everything into the ground.  Thanks, MatthewThis first one is just looking down the "range".  Don't worry, it is 4 miles to the next road and fruther to the next house.  Here is a side view to show that it does angle.  Oh Yea  3/4 inch plate for the target. This is just looking at the front of the target.  It was peppered with .243 and 22-250.Here is a back view of it.  Just so you can see how it was attached.   Thanks for looking and enjoy!  MatthewLast edited by johnsonmopar; 01-17-2009 at 01:52 PM.
Reply:Cool - mind if I use your design?  I shoot a Rem 700 in 22-250.  The angled plate  deflecting the rounds down seem like a reasonable safety addition. Also, do you think you could have gotten away with 1/4 or 1/2 inch plate.  Since the plate pivots on impact I wouldn't think you'd have any penetration/deformation problems with a smaller plate, particularly if you use hollow points or soft points.  AP rounds might be a problem.
Reply:I most say that is one genius design  and one nice "Range"Last edited by HGHS-Corp; 01-18-2009 at 03:39 PM.¤If you got money, i've got time
Reply:Your shooting range looks like the area I grew in, central Kansas.  4 miles or so away, why are you crowding  your neighbors? Tough as nails and damn near as smart
Reply:I wouldn't go with anything thinner.  I have a target that I use for .22 and 17hmr and it is 3/8".  Any High-Power will drill right through it.  I am shooting light 58gr V Maxs out of my .243 and it peels the paint off of the back of 3/4" at 250 yards.   I guess you could always practice some plug welds if you wanted to use something lighter.  Matthew
Reply:Tresi I am in western Kansas, so we are just a little bit more DEAD out here....  I know it is rough having my back yard being so close to the next guys....   Matthew

Reply:Nice work on that target, like the way you hung it off the rebar crossbeams.I got ahold of (what was left of) a few reactive targets, made from 1/2" (I think) triangles and one big flat plate mounted on a pole.  I don't kow what the guys were blasting away with, but they got penetration in several places .... I was going to use them for a project down the line, maybe an interesting water fountain or yard scuplture.

Reply:Lots more fun than shoot'in paper targets!  We have a never-ending supply of mild steel circle drops, for the bigger cals. we shoot them full of holes, like to use 5/16" & hang up a fresh one.  This is what happens when you have Free Steel & way too much down time!  For safety we shoot at 200yds min. with high power & 50 yds min. with .22lr.  Great look'in setup Matthew
Reply:Gee Nice target. I use old cars, trucks and buses that a friend gets into his scrap yard. We shoot them up in a large old gravel pit that he owns. Between myself and the rest of the crew we  shoot everything from 22cal up to 58cal and wad cutters to AP, tracers, etc. One guy an ex marine even brings a home made rocket launcher. Thhe pit even doublels as the police range.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:As a guy who was hit in the leg with ricochet from a .45, luckily my jeans stopped it and I was just left with a really nasty welt, I gotta point out the design flaws in all the reactive I see here.  The main thing is you need to control your ricochet, so every surface that isn't the target itself needs to be as thin and streamlined as can be.  The target my cousin made was not how I would've made it but I didn't think anything of it.  He took the circular plate, took a piece of flat and welded it on to the plate and bushing.  The bullet caught the weld and ricocheted back at me.johnsonmopar, I would take the bar the target swings on and but weld the ends of it to the re-bar.  You've made a cup there that you can't control the ricochet.  Also I would torch off and grind down the swing arms that are on the front of the target.  qc-ken, those targets hanging down with flat stock is how my cousin made the one we were using.I wish I had the link still but there was a site that talked about target design and ricochet.
