Readywelder II Spool Gun for aluminum

Hey guys,I apologize if I am wrong, but I felt this post belonged in this forum. My buddy just handed me a brand new, in the box, still factory sealed ReadyWelder II Spool Gun with internal contactor. He bought it and never used it and wanted to get my opinion. But before I get into it I wanted to ask if anyone had any experience with it. It says it is rated up to 450amps!!! The only reason I might buy it from him would be for aluminum. I have my own very nice setup for everything else. For aluminum I have been using my tig, but I am really slow at it and thought maybe this would be a good alternative for non-critical stuff that I can just lay down a nice bead with. Reply:There are a couple of threads on this forum.  Smithboy wrote one and I (tapwelder) wrote one.  Smithboy's thread did an aluminum bleacher repair.Also check out ebay purchases--contact buyers.Basically, it does work.
Reply:I have used one to put together/repair aluminum bleachers for a baseball field.  It worked pretty good for me.  We had a 24v diesel tractor (or truck, I can't remember now) to hook it to and the aluminum wasn't too thick.  We only did short beads, maybe 2 inches max...I had a couple of feeding problems, but nothing major.  As I understand it, you can also hook this thing up as a spool gun for a DC welding power source.  I didn't try that, but I imagine that would be a pretty cheap way to get yourself a spool gun for a machine without having to get a control box...The one big impression I was left with is that the gas valve was very rudimentary and wasted a lot of argon...however, for what it's used for, you can't really complain too much about that.Ooops, Tap beat me to it.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.

Reply:ive got one as well ive done a lot with it on my boat thickest ive done is 1/4 aluminum no problem for the price it works well and its portable so i take it deer hunting since we hunt some pretty treacherous terrain its nice to have a lot of rock crawler guys have put them to use as well350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
