Does anyone have any input on using sili bronze ( evendur ) for automotive panel welding? I've read an article by metalshapers. org about it and they say its ok but not for structural steel applications. I wont be welding any frames. I'm working on a 70 vw beetle and used sili to weld the floor pans in and seemed strong enough. I also have alot of sheetmetal to replace. A friend of mine has been doing the welding for me, tig to be exact. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks guys!    Matt
Reply:Ive used it before for body panel repair.  Less heat input = Less distortion.  Doesn't rust.  Easy to file, dolly, finish. OK for floor pans.As you have already mentioned, not for structual frame welding.I like it.
Reply:you should be just fine
Reply:Sounds good to me! thanks guys. ill have to get him over here to fire up the tig n cash in on my barter work!
Reply:I am not sure about Everdur rod but if you are able to buy Sifbronze it can be used for structural. There are many thousands of motorcycle frames that have been bronze welded over the last fifty years that have stood the test of time. You can tig it or use oxy/fuel. Different rods for each though.
Reply:am i doing this right? i am just new in using silicon bronze. i tried TIG welding sheet when i noticed that the bronze does not behave just like in other metal. there was a molten bronze seems to be much more viscous with a much higher surface tension. it doesn't flow nearly as readily as the other metals and it  has a tendency to pull itself into blobs. any tricks or tips on this? been using this to my volkswagen repair project.
Reply:You shouldn't even be melting the base metal.  Run very low amperage, and essentially braze it together.  Make sure that your mating surfaces are bright metal, as cleanliness is very important here.  The silicon bronze should wet out nicely (much more so than most are accustomed to with GTAW.)
Reply:During my search for info on Sili bronze, I found that it is commonly used for bike frames, motorcycle and bicycle. It may need to be prepped differently for automotive paint....Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:I oxy sili-brazed some galvanized cast iron pipe fittings, at first all it did was sort melt and ball up, after playing around with the flame, and getting some help here, I finally got a nice smooth flow able puddle, I imagine tig would be a little more  heat controlable, you may just need more heat, but don't melt the steel.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
