Trailer welding

I thought I would start a discussion for those interested in working on trailers.When I was running on my own I had Liability Insurance, Bonding, and Certification.When I went to work later for other welders, they carried those things.I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it would be a nice discussion for those hobbiest to know what it takes exactly to cover their six when they begin welding on trailers.For you working hands out there who weld on trailers. Here are some questions....What kind of insurance do you have?Are you bonded?  does it matter?Are you certified in the welding you will be performing?  What about engineered plans vs unengineered plans? What are your limits?
Reply:Sort of along the same lines would be truck/car frames.A local maintenance garage owner welded his 'own' truck frame.While his wife was driving it, she was hit from behind.The frame broke, shoved the bed into the cab and broke her back.It wasn't a big hit as the car that hit her didn't have any damage.She is now paralyzed and after both insurance company's investigations, was denied any monetary compensation.Their reason was that 'he' was at fault as he was not qualified to do those repairs.Just some food for thought.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!

Reply:My boss suggested I seek certification once I became enrolled in class. The more I learned, the more I felt that he should do the same, but that is just not realistically gonna happen. But the owner carries the policies. Going solo is another game completely. When you read through various instructions that come with hitch products, many recommend that any welding be left to "qualified or certified" weldors, an obvious legal disclaimer, and for good reason. Reply:Who holds a trailer welding certification, and does anyone have engineered plans for every type of trailer repair they do, for all the different stresses and breaks that can occur? In all the different locations they occur.
