Hey guys, I have a project I need help with. I am making fermenter for beer. I need to find someone who can weld stainless steel.I am using a stainless steel hopper from toldedo metal spinning and a 55 gallon stainless steel drum. I need the top and bottom cut out so if you have a plasma cutter all the better. Then the most important part and I have a question about this part. I need a food grade weld for the hopper and drum meet. The question is should the weld be on the inside or outside. I would think inside right? This way there will be no open small spaces on the inside.
Reply:The man you need to call is Ken Ferguson.  He lives in Northern Virginia.  He's been welding for 40+ years and has all the tools and expertise you'll need- taught me everything I know about welding.  If the price is right I know he'll travel to anywhere in Maryland.  His number is (540) 788-3556.  Tell him Tye directed you to him.

Reply:In my wine making days I was shopping for stainless steel barrels.   I received a very reasonalbe quote from Skolink Inc.  Check them out...  http://www.skolnik.com/winedrum.shtml#
Reply:I agree, it will be easier to make the sanitary weld from the inside.  The easiest joint would be a lap joint, where one piece fits snugly inside the other and they over lap about 1/2" or so.  Many small tack welds evenly spaced around will help with getting a good tight fit.  If the joint fit-up was tight enough, you could do a very smooth fusion without added filler.  With this type of joint, you wouldn't really need any welding on the outside, and you could get away without having to shield the outside from sugaring if you are careful to keep the inside weld small.A square butt weld, with 100% penetration, like the beautiful welds made on SS beer kegs is very challenging and requires machined surfaces and super excellent joint fit-up.
Reply:I just brewed a batch in a converted 1/2 keg.   I built this brewery a long time ago.  I used fiber washers on each side of the pipe coming out of the bottom of the keg.   With the fiber washers or silicone O rings, it can be taken apart and cleaned.NOW I can (will) weld some fittings on them.  I didn't have the know how then.Sorry I'm not in MD.  David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
