I got some Crown Royal Kirkrod a few years back just to try it out. But i haven't found anything i couldn't weld with my spoolgun so i never used it, until today. I took some 1 1/2" OD alum pipe cut lengthwise and vise gripped it back together with a small gap prob equal to the sawblade. Then i torch welded it with the RK rod and it welded great. I couldn't hand break the parts when i was done...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:I'm looking to try some of that aluminum brazing rod soon.  The chain on my dirtbike somehow managed to gouge out and crack the crankcase on my dirtbike.  I'm not exactly sure how it happened, no matter how I pry and twist on the chain I can't get it to make contact with the crankcase.  The hole may have already been there but now has started leaking.  I want to use the brazing rod for better wear resistance to impact/wear than epoxy.  I can't weld because there are some machined fit parts on the other side of the crack and welding tends to cause aluminum to sag on the back side.  The same day this started leaking, I also punched a hole in my clutch cover.  The bike was leaking oil everywhere.I'm going to try the Bernzomatic stuff because I can get it more easily.Last edited by 76GMC1500; 05-28-2007 at 06:38 PM.
Reply:I have never had any luck with that snake oil crap. The TIG and now that I have discovered AL stick rods make me never want to see that stuff ever again.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I have a job coming up that is an older pedal tractor, does anyone know if this is pot metal or any ideas?  I have some of the hts-2000 rods, it says it will work on pot metal, ever tried it?

Reply:The hardware store brand Bernzomatic stuff worked ok on my crankcase.  It works really well on clean aluminum, but when you have a crack that keeps seeping oil it gets a little more difficult.  It's very difficult to use.  It doesn't wet out like normal brazing materials do.  It will only stick where you touch the rod.  The working temperature range is only like 50 degrees.  If you get it the slightest bit too hot, the entire repair explodes off in a cloud of white smoke and you have to start over.  Aluminum gives no indication of temperature.  With an acetylene torch, I take a sooty flame and cover the area to be brazed prior to heating.  The soot burns off just below the working temperature so you know when you are ready to braze.  Again, the stuff is extremely difficult to use but it isn't snake oil.  It does provide a satisfactory repair and works well when the other side of the repair has critical dimensions and you don't want any of the sagging of the backside associated with welding.

Reply:Yeah, I'll get a picture when I can find the camera.
Reply:Not much to see, there used to be 2 large gouges in the end of the boss in the casting from the chain.  One of the gouges was pretty much through the casting and had some cracks in it.
Reply:Wow, hard to tell even where the fix was.  Looks like you did a nice job and the stuff semeed to work well.Does make a puzzle as to how the chain would get way over there.  I'd wonder if the sprocket and chain were mismatched or worn?  Is the sprocket badly worn?Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:I don't know how it did that.  In order to take the picture, I also had to remove the chain guard which seems like it would have prevented the chain from contacting the case.  The guard was worn some, but still should be able to protect.  I have also seen some unusual wear on the front of the swingarm.  No matter how I pull and pry on the chain I cannot get it to make contact in either place.  However, that back wheel moves nearly 13 inches so the angles and chain slack are drastically different depending on conditions.  Next, I might remove the shock and swing the swingarm and check for why the chain made contact.  I haven't had any wear problems since I made the repair, though. One possibility is that the lower chain guide got bashed in and may be causing the slack side of the chain to bunch up at high speeds.  Between the bunching and the extra slack with the wheel bottomed out in its travel, the chain may be able to make contact.

Reply:Heres a small job i did today at a campsite on the neighbors boat which had 4 holes cut in the bottom by a circular saw while using it as a saw horse. Sure my mig would have done a better job but there was no electric for my welder.  It might not look pretty but it dosen't leak anymore...Bob Attached ImagesBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:I was wondering if you can use that stuff with a Mapp torch or a propane torch?   Will these just not get hot enough, and how is it on really thin stuff?  I have a small engine that fell of a truck and got a crack on the bottom of the crankcase.  I was wondering if this stuff would seal it up?  75GMC1500 how did you overcome the problems with seepin oil?
Reply:Mapp and propane torches are prefered, but I didn't have one so I used acetylene.  The working temeprature is very low, 700-750 degrees F.  I overcame the seeping oil problem with extreme patience.  I would clean it as best as I could and then braze away.  It took sever tries before I was able to do it.  The oil level in the case was well below the hole, but there was some residual oil deep in the crack that I couldn't get out.
Reply:Thanks, i tried a propane torch but couldn't get the base metal hot enough to get good bonding, i'll try that mapp.
