So in case you were wondering, the idiot is me  I accidentally forgot again to shut off my gas tank on the mig last time I was welding and this is getting expensive when it all leaks out. I have been doing some searching but come up with nothing yet:Is there any way to help safeguard myself against this stupid mistake I will surely make again? I wish the answer of "just remember" was that easy. Are there automatic shutoff valves, better effective ways to leak proof what is there? specialty purpose tank minders or similar? You get my train of thought.

Reply:Make a little cap for the valve used to turn on the gas..... attach a belt clip to that...when you turn on the gas attach that to your belt.... you won't go for long without remembering to turn off the gas when you are leaving the area....Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:After you pay for a few cylinders of wasted gas you make a habit of turning them off.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."

Reply:Why don't you just eliminate the leaks from your gas lines?Have we all gone mad?

Reply:PAY ATTENTION!!Thats what I always (try) to do, and ive been pretty lucky so far. On my SS tig setup, you have to clamp the stinger lead to the power block, switch the welder to EN, tig, then repeat in reverse. Turning the gas off and on is just one of those steps. Ive been lucky so far and have never left a bottle on, but I am known to get caught up in what im doing, so im sure its just a matter of time...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:"but i have OCD and have been known to go back out to the shop an double check my tanks"I also do this, I usually go out and check my garage before going to bed( if I have done any welding/cutting,) to check for  smoke and to check valves and I also check the valve on the air compressor, sometimes I will check my O/A a couple times just to make sure....Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st

Reply:Originally Posted by tastyratzIs it possible to seal it up to the point of just leaving the tank on all the time where that wont happen?I am pretty new at welding but have been around it my whole life. It was always a big nono to leave the tank on. I just happen to be a pretty forgetful person and a hobby welder so I might go weeks between uses.
Reply:Yeah, tighten all your connections and you won't have any leaks.ɹǝʌo ǝɯ lloɹ 'sıɥʇ pɐǝɹ uɐɔ noʎ ɟı
Reply:My tanks are chained to the wall near the breaker box to be within reach and the switches are covered with a laminated turn off the gas placard that must be lifted to turn off the juice.  It isnt 100% foolproof but good enough to save a couple tanks of gas a year easilly.  Not leaving the regulator connected helps a lot too.  I switch my 75/25 between different welders and the pure argon gets disconected every time when I get the project done and the o?a gets the same.  Helps me not be so stupid, but I still forget on accasion.I'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:after you weld daily for years u get into a routine, at the end of the day you go through " a shut down" procedure lol , did i unplug the oa torch and hang it up did i put all my tools away in the tool box so ill find them tommorow, did i open every drawer to check to see whats missing, did i look at the hammers to be sure they are back where they go, did i shut off all the tanks, did i check fuel level on the portable , did i lock the doors on the trailer lol and on and on and on, it becomes routine after awhile, the next day its routine to check the oil as soon as u get outta the truckI forgot how to change this.
Reply:It's just called developing a good habit. Like said, after you have to buy a few wasted tanks you'll get into a good habit. I shut off the O/A tanks after each use, be it one minute or an hour. It's just the habit I've gotten into. Same with the mig. Just concentrate on developing the habit!!  I'm sure you've heard the term: "you can't outengineer idiots", so it's up to you.                                       MikeLast edited by mla2ofus; 09-16-2011 at 07:29 PM.Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Well I have an idea, it may sound slightly odd but what if you got 1 of those flashing led bike lights and turned it on when you opened the gas. it flashes when you are working but when you stop you will see it and turn it off . You can also get a solenoid for propane cylinders on boats ( so the line can be shut off when not cooking) that may be something (although more expensive) to look into. Thats all the brain crumbs I got for today.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:Mine don't leak much, so leaving them on isn't a big deal for me. My biggest problem is remembering to turn the gas on before I start welding! A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:When tigging I hang my welding hood on the argon bottle as soon as I'm done welding, to remember to turn bottle off. When its time to weld again I grab my hood, turn bottle on.
Reply:OK, repeat after me  Gas First! Gas First!  from now on your procedure on any welder is Gas first. You turn on your gas before you turn on your machine, you turn off your gas before you turn off your machine. Say it to other welder friends, say it to your wife and when she gives you that WTF look you just snicker and before you know it it will be automatic.  If that fails, Tozzi is right, buy enough gas and you will remember.    Meanwhile take a spray of soapy water and track down and fix the leaks. Reply:I am trained to turn the gas off when I turn the welder off. I even catch myself turning it off subconsciously at coffee and lunch breaks. My problem comes with remembering to turn it back on, makes for some creative swearing when I come back to work and the first bead I lay down looks like a chunk of 'Aero' bar.I won't walk past an oxy-acetylene set-up without checking the bottles. 10 checks a day sometimes...OCD I guess.Seams like you could set up as pressure switch in the line that lights a big strobing "Gas On" sign. Might be fun for parties too
Reply:Yea I know good habit is king. If only my parents told me to remember as a child I might forget this memory problem  I plan on putting up a few signs to help. My hopes were that maybe something out there existed for shops with larger tanks than myself where employee screwups cost them much more.I did notice the other day though that the nylon gas feed line that comes out of the back of the machine into a quick connect on the flowmeter was leaking at the quick connect [sarcasm]shock, those never leak![/sarcasm]. Went to the local home depot to pick up a compression fitting though and they didn't have anything under 1/4 (unless I wasn't' looking in the right place?).I also found that my little 55cf tank was easy to forget because it disappeared behind the welder on the cart. My next solution? upgrade to an 80cf tank so it sticks up over the machine  yea... that's why I got it sure. Hopefully less out of sight out of mind then.
Reply:If you can remember to zip up after you finish your business, remembering to shut off the tank shouldn't be a problem, LOL!!                                               MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Keep a spray bottle of 50/50 dishsoap and water in the garage. When you connect a new bottle gently spray the connection points to make sure you don't have leaks. You should be able to shut your tank valve overnight and not have lost any pressure.

Reply:Tastyratz - you need to build and patent  Rube Goldberg type of mechanism that gives X amount of gas flow time per cycle, and then closes the valve. Maybe a wind-up clock spring triggered by a melting candle loosing its weight and tipping a balance beam? Seriously though, I suppose a solenoid valve located near the supply would be workable, ala  fixed location fire extinguisher's CO2 bottle..Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 09-20-2011 at 12:17 AM.
Reply:Buy multiple smaller bottles. You'll still have an empty bottle, but you won't be "out of gas".If you're having that much trouble remembering to turn off the gas, it makes me question what other safety items you're forgetting also.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
