Reply:ed, is this for the curved balcony rail that you posted a few months ago? If so, what did you bend the curves with? Do you have any pics of it all together? I did make up a version of the bender you posted, I'll take some pics and post them in a new thread.Edit:You were posting as I was asking questions!!!Last edited by tessdad; 05-30-2009 at 08:47 PM.Reason: updateJust my opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:congratulations on completing your first rail job. I don't use those type castings. However, I would consider drilling and tapping or placing a stud through the baluster. It would be a much cleaner look. If you use screw then you could break the head off and add filler and clean it up.Is that cast iron and what filler are you using? I hope it is for cast.Looks like you used heat to bend the cap. Cooling the inside with water while heating the outside work well for bending. I did a thread on my process a while back.Is that rust Just because your are in Florida? My first rails job was a set of curved step rails. Nice way to start.
Reply:Nice, really nice!

Reply:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...specific+liftsI built a temporary lift for some decorative window guards. It might help you out on those window guards. The lift was bolted in the middle with a flange for transport. The flanges were made from 4x4 plate. Hundreds of 3x3 and 4x4 plates are about the only thing I purchase from King.
Reply:Wow,That is freakin' awesome. I can barely draw a straight line much less weld long straight pieces of Metal, but I'm TRYING !!Good Job,/Jman....

Reply:Hey Ed. Another way you could bend your cap is to use your channel as the pattern. Once you get the channel bent, brace it really good. Bracing it by bridging a piece of metal from end to end. Also add vertical bars from bridge to channel to keep the channel from flattening. You can't brace it too much. Bracing it this way will also allow you to get off that table, get you closer to the work and allow you to use more body weight. Best of all you know it fits and you are basically finished with the rail once it is bent. You could do it directly on the rail, fix it sturdy do something. I would wait to put ornament on until after cap in bent. Go slow and tack every 3-4 inches. You need several clamps. Take a break if you get tired. Well, I looked back at your rail and it doesn't look as though you used a channel under the cap. If not, then save the info for the future. I find it easier to build a rail with channel under the cap. |
