hey guys anybody have some pointers on how to hammer out some of these little hooks. i know how to get the tapered ends and bend but how do you get that tight of a curl on top? thanks for any direction Attached Imageswww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:Piece of cake, if I can explain it correctly. 1st, see the close up shot.. the little opening in the middle is kinda squared. after you put the taper in the end of the rod, You would heat and bend the taperd end around a piece of square or rectangular stock. the stock needs to be welded to a table. Let the taperd end cool to get some strength back. then start heating the rest of it just outside the squared area, Proceed to wrap around and around to desired size. If you want, there is a way to do it cold, Oh yea, if it starts to lift on you as you are rolling it. a good wooden mallet won't leave any scars when you hit itLincoln Ranger 8 Lincoln 175 Drill pressLincoln 225 mig Plasma 8 ft brake 52" jump shear
Reply:I see itAlmost to the melting point, but not quite. You see the surface bubble thing start, and quit. Then bend until it gets too firm. Then put some more heat to it. And continue bendingI think I got it right. I just do right angles, and never have done a round."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:The one guy I saw do it used a pair on needle nose pliers. You heat and taper. Then heat the whole area to be bent and quench just the tip. Grab with pliers and start your roll. As said, you can just flatten if it gets off. I have seen special pliers for doing loops with round jaws as opposed to the sharp edges on standard pliers.
Reply:I'll add: an advantage of oxy/fuel heating is that 'arc length' isn't an issue. You can dance the flame anywhere you need more heat. I bent a piece of 1 1/4" water pipe into an almost perfect 150* arc, 5" radius, just heating it on the driveway, laying on milkcrates. #4 tip in my Harris IIRC. When it was ready, it almost bent like a spagetti noodle.9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Reply:The round-nose pliers are generally used in making jewelry and crafts. My g/f has a set ....... well, they MIGHT be in my toolbox, though ......
Reply:thanks guys for all the tips on doing this. hopefully will get to it tommoro. i do a lot of pipe heating and bending with a big rose bud i get so pissed when i go to the welding shop and ask for a 180 degree bend with a small radius on 1/4 inch pipe and they say the machine wont do it. so i just stay home with my eye ball and a rose bud and alot of sweat and make it how i want it. any way the deal with the hook's are that a friend bought a few on a trip and now wants like 20 so mount on the wall to hold her curtains back. so of course i said oh yeah no problem let me whip them right out for you. this was after about 10 keystones and helping her husband work on the drainage field for there housewww.burdettenetworks.com

Reply:It really shouldn't be a problem if you know how to make the points. The one she showed you is made over seas and mas produced, because there are no hammer marks on it. Hand made stuff like that always has a little variations to it. Good luck.
