Hi all,I've had my JD2 Model 3 for a year or so now and finally have a little time to get the cage on my CJ-7 built. I'm using 1 3/4" .120 wall HREW for the cage.I've found lately that converting these to work with a cheap Harbor Freight air/hydraulic cylinder is just as simple as making the frame to hold it, the cylinder itself was only $80 on sale.My plan is to build the frame for this bender out of scrap channel iron I have, not ideal but the price is right. I was wondering if you guys could take a look and see if it's strong enough as is, or if I need to add more bracing;Mocking it up with a manual cylinder (hadn't got the air/hydro yet at the time);Welded with some triangulation;Strong enough you think or should I add some more, like maybe this;Thanks,Jordan

Reply:Your going to need a strap from the bending arms back to the base, parallel to the 'C' channel. If you don't put that in there, the hydraulic ram will want to twist the 'C' channel.1/4" x 3" strap should work. Just bolt it in where the front bolts are & bolt to the hydraulic base. Also add the second 'triangulation' at the base. It will go a long way toward strengthening the base. Reply:I ended up just bolting it to my welding table for the time being instead of messing with putting it on an old engine stand. I wanted to get to bending. It works excellent, only thing I do want to do is change the bolt in the bender where the ram attaches to a grade 8, but the grade 5 didn't have any trouble. This cylinder works great.Jordan |
