Since I dont want to have a huge pull up bar in the garage or house I had an idea.  This is sort of based off the pull up bars that work in doorways by only using the down force applied by the user.  (sort of)This one would hang from the second floor and be easily removable...I need to know what type of bar I could use to keep this somewhat light but strong enough to support my 300lb butt.  Also should any more structure be added to it?
Reply:Is this going between the bars of a railing?  Gusset plates on the corners (but not the inside ones, where it would cause the frame to stick out further), perhaps a diagonal bar across the front of the frame. Are your upstairs neighbors gonna get annoyed cuz you're intruding on their patio space?
Reply:I live in a town house and the second floor is a loft in my living room, so its inside. So there is no worries about space.Yes the measurements will put the two top bars sliding right in between the rails of the bannister.Gussets and a cross bar should be no problem.  What thickness tubing you think would be suitable?
Reply:I would think that just 1 1/2 square tube, 14 gauge would be fine, and use black pipe for the bar.
Reply:I used one inch black pipe for mine.  works good
Reply:I built a set of free standing pull up bars last year for a local gym using 1-1/4" schedule 40 black pipe for the grab bars.  Seemed kinda big diameter to me, but that's the diameter the gym owner wanted.  Worked good, the bars are still in daily use and he called me the other day asking to have more of them built since he has expanded his gym.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
