i have been practising tig welding for some time now and i am not bad but have never tried welding under something like overhead is it possible to weld upside down with tig or will the puddle just drip on my lap. how should i go about trying this position.also can you give me any tips on filling up gaps to join 2 pieces togetherthank youJason
Reply:I know people make manual TIG welds overhead all the time, as in fixed position pipe welds, and I guess keeping the puddle in place is a matter of not welding too hot, keeping the puddle small enough, chilling the puddle by adding filler wire, allowing the puddle to cool by weaving side to side, and/or pulsing the current.  People that do out-of-position manual TIG have my respect. My experience is with mechanized orbital tube/pipe welding equipment where a major control of the puddle in all positions is through pulsing the current from high to low, melting and then cooling the puddle.  On pipe joints the wire can be syncro-pulsed with the current, and the weave can be synced with the pulse as well, with high current pulse and high wire feed at the toes of the joint.
Reply:The trick to weld inverted tig is to not loose your shielding gas,,And to change the torch angle from the "standard" 30 degrees and run it at 10 degrees..Mostly though keepin the puddle in the gas and a little less heat will do the trick..Come to class on the 18'TH and we'll try it!  Now about these gaps..How big are they?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:thanks and zap i will be there on the 18th let me know if i can contribute or help in anyway.the gap's are about 1/4 inch but even if there where bigger how do you handle them without burning through the side i need to join. :-)thanks

Reply:Tig is pretty cool overhead.  That is the best part of TIG, total control.  Watch the puddle, you can do it!  No gaps though, clean steel and good fitup. The filler will follow the heat.David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:thanks Dave hay i look forward to meeting you on the 18th and doing some stick welding with you.Jason
Reply:Keep everything the same as you would for down hand or vertical.   The gap isn't a problem, bridge the gap then feed the wire inside and work the cup side to side stopping for maybe a second when your at the side, possibly the most important thing is to keep the wire feeding in consistantly, trying to drip it in will be harder than continous wire going in.I'd rather be hunting........USE ENOUGH HEAT.......Drifting around Aussie welding more pipe up, for something different.....wanting to get home.
Reply:Today I welded a transmission cooler line for a dump truck with an allison in it.I unhooked one end to drain it, layed in the grass on my back, worked the foot pedal with my knee and welded the hole overhead.  Lotsa fun.  I sort of chased the hole a little.  In the end it didn't leak.  I couldn't tell you how thin the tubing was, but it had to be 3/4".  Carries up to 300 psi.  The owner was recomended to replace the lines.  I used a gas lens, but will never again because I got some spatter or what ever on the gas lens.  I also cut some 1/4" by 4" plates for overhead practice.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
