My cousin is in the process of trying to design and build a trailer bbq smoker ,rotisserie combo he is going to have a 500gal propane tank 8ft long 41" in diameter is going to be cut in half width wise so 2, 4 foot sections he plans to build a 8'x12' tandem axle flatbed trailer to house them on. the 4 foot stacks would stand on end and have a motor/chain assembly which would turn the shaft to both cylinders at once, inside the cylinders would be round adjustable shelves and a center rod which will hold the shelves and connects everything to the  rotisserie motor. He is building the trailer out of 2"x5" 3/16 rectangle tube for the outside frame and 2"x3" 11 gauge rectangle tube cross members  on 16in centers also under the smoker area he will also add 2"x2" 1/4 square tube as added support and metal plate for flooring under smoker area rest of trailer will be covered in 2"x6" wood.He wants to build it like the picture shows. Is there any  way this layout could be towed safely down the highway.I am telling him he would have to stagger the halves on or right side one on left but staggered. One of the cylinders would have to be basically just slid to the other side of the trailer Can I get some feedback it this would work as far as stability and  Sorry for the long winded description we are both total newbies to this he has a brand new lincoln flux/mig welder that he just bought and alot of hope. Hope some one here can shed some light on this situation Thanks so much Attached Images

Also, when yall are cutting the tank, please set up a camera 200 yards away or so...that way we are able to see the results on the Darwin Awards 2011. I have high hopes that ya'll will win an award. But seriously, r u fukkin kidding?
Reply:Hey guys be nice it has already had the first cut done supposedly and the guy he is buying it from assured him that after opening it up for about 3 weeks it will be fine What do you all suggest  I am not touching the trailer my expertise is with computers I am trying to find out info about this so my cousin does not kill himself

Reply:Tell your cousin to try building a cart for his welder and maybe a bunch of other projects , maybe even go take some welding classes at the local college, and then do some more projects, before building a trailer. I'm willing to bet he bought a 110v machine, this machine won't have enough amps for a build like this.Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st

Reply:Will I know what I am asking is for some common courtesy and help not a bunch of disrespect I know he is not going about the build the right way but you had to learn some where didn't you, all I wanted was to know if he should move the load of the smokers around like I suggested and if you all thought the trailer was going to be strong enough to handle the load There are hundreds of ppl out there that have cut apart propane tanks and they do it every day Sure they don't just open a valve and start cutting there is prep involved and still a chance that it could be flammable But if done right it should be fine and I just found out that the guy he is buying it form for a $100.00 will make the first cut
Reply:You guys are a couple of years from being able to safely design and build something like this.  You just don't know enough about this yet to know what a steep learning curve you are going to have. What other tools do you guys own?  You'll need more fab tools than just a welder.

Reply:Heed the advice given here, it is for your own good, or go away.Tim Beeker.
Reply:But maybe he will be just using the trailer on his property next door to Danny?I also agree and think the best idea is to buy a trailer and then put your creations on top. Doesn't have to be a new trailer, used trailers go cheap sometimes.
Reply:Clayman,do yourself a favor and read what these guys are saying, not just the words on the page. They aren't putting the effort out for their own benefit. And don't get offended if they tell you not to do something. It's not a slight against you. It's an effort to keep everyone safe.Personally, I'd make sure that that first cut is one that opens up the tank. and isn't just a straight line down one side. There are no problems. Reply:It looks like the trailer police force is increasing! It's a shame that when someone comes on here looking for advice anymore they get more ridicule and BS than help.Someone with the experience that some of you all supposedly have should be able to give a little more direction to someone looking for help, and I am so sick of hearing "It's going to kill somebody". I would like to know the statics as to haw many people have been killed by a trailer that was home built? If you go to any of the big box stores and look closely at some of the trailers they sell I'll guarantee my son could lay down a stronger weld when he was twelve years old.Ok I'll get out of here as I hear the sirens cumming.Something else, if any of you live in a rural area, just go and look at some of the trailers and hitches that show up at the local sale barn on a week end. Not saying it's right to use stuff like that but it makes a lot of what is posted on here look good.Trailblazer 302Hobart Stickmate AC/DCLincoln SP 135 TSmith torchSpoolmatic 30A

Reply:My first thread was about a trailer. I explained what I wanted to do, the tools I had to do it with, and the way I wanted to go about things. I had an open mind for the suggestions that I knew I would get. Because I looked through the forrum at the trailer threads before me. This was a big help in keeping me thick skinned to what might be said. I asked for advice, guidence, and opinions. I got all three. Am I a professional weldor? no. I'm not. But I've got 12+ yrs of welding under my belt, and comfortable welding in all possitions, and know my machine and it's capabilities/limitations. I've done all the welding I needed to on my trailer. Showed the end result including the welds. And even with the number of "fire martial Bills" we have on here, not one person had something bad to say in the end. If you're actually here to learn, than that is exactly what you'll do. If you're hear to say "This is what I'm doing" and are to stuburn to be able to adjust what you're going to do if someone gives you knowledgable information as to why you shouldn't do it that way. Well, then there isn't much here for you on this forrum. It's really easy to tell who's on here to help people, and who's on here to bitch and moan. Typically, the people that are asking you questions about your plans, tools, procedures, design, etc. are the people that A) are trying to get a full understanding of what you're trying to do, and B) aren't going to jump to conclusions based on the limited information conveyed in a few lines of text. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:For anyone that cares or likes BBQ......lots of 500 and 1000s being used for cookershttp://www.thesmokering.com/forum/Clayman,I think you are on the right track to load the trailer(that someone else built)equally on each side.As others have said don't take it personal there is good info here just sometimes it is delivered with a sledge hammer

Reply:Clayman,Now that the whole "don't build a trailer for your first build" speaches have been laid down. the next issue is the layout on a trailer for your BBQ. As shown, the load is unbalanced. However, you need to take into consideration everything else you'll be bringing with you for the cook. wood/char for the fire. Coolers for the meet/ chairs, canopee, tables, etc. The trailer wont be pulled empty (BBQ only) very often. So the way these other items will be loaded onto the trailer for travel will be something that needs to be taken into consideration. Also, A lot of guys like to be standing on the trailer while their cooking, and a lot like to be on the ground. The type of BBQ will dictate which way will work best for you. It will also dictate how the BBQ is set up on the trailer. If you want to be on the ground. then closer to a side is required. If you don't mind being on the trailer than you've got more options on where the Q can go.Centered on the trailer (drivers to Passengers) is Ideal, but the size of your Q may or may not allow for this dependent on the size of your trailer, and if you want to be able to sit on the trailer as well. The design shown will allow ample walking space on the trailer, which corrilates to ample storage area for all the extras. Also the distance, and amount of travel the trailer will be doing should be taken into consideration. 1 or 2 trips a year across town vs a multistate long haul every month or two. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:I had a guy comming to our shop with a flat deck towing and his home made trailer on it with the tongue of it hanging by a few leftover weld. The guy build the trailer in his backyard with a little buzzboxe and some old 6010.I remember him comming to the shop before to buy some steel and asking question on what size tongue he should use and what he should use for the side and cross member.I suggested for him to save money and lives, to cut all his part and tack it togethere and bring it over on anothere trailer and I could welded all togethere in no time .But stuborn he said he wanted to welded himself, how hard can it be he said. these people dont understand and never will..Sure enough he was heading on a fishing trip , which would have taking him down a coast mountain chain toward the ocean for some samon fishing,Thank god he didn't make 20 miles out of town on a quiet road, because he said he crossed over on both side of the lane and almost hit the ditch, he was laughing and happy to tell the story how lucky he's always been in these kind of situation.Only me working in a public establishment stopped me from giving this guy a wooping. This is not a small matter, you're not only gambling with your life, but with the life of innocent people around you.Last edited by Dantheman; 10-07-2011 at 02:38 PM.

Reply:I'm all for a smart @ss comment here, or there. but taking over someone else's thread because of a pissing contest is rediculous. If you're not going to add something useful to the conversation why are you even posting?Clayman, I'm confused on how your rotisorie works. Sounds like a pie display an Sharies more then a proper rotisserie. Don't most rotisseries rotate on a horizontal shaft instead of a verticle shaft? I'm pretty sure I've even seen wheel type rotisseries where there are several horizontal shafts that rotate independently while rotating around a central horizontal shaft. My understand of a rotisserie is the point is to keep the juices in the meat. meaning as it cooks it's continually being flipped over so that the juices never get a chance to drip out the bottom. Or at least minimize the amount of fluid that is lost. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
