ok....my backs against the wall here....i need to pass this plate test TOMORROW!!     7018 open root on 1" plate....horizontal...vertical and overhead....all of which being backgouged or ground out and welded on the back side of the rootthe overhead is a flat root and fill i believe with the backside being welded overhead after cleaned out.....the horizontal is pretty straightforward but the vertical is a vertical DOWN open root with uphand fill and again downhand capive never done a plate test like this before and i need to pass....my biggest worry is the downhand 7018...it seemed to go in alright after a couple rods but i had a bit of a problem with rod sticking and porosity because of it on both the root and cap.....i dont really have a chance to practice anymore....gotta pass this thingi would LOVE and APPRECIATE greatly any advice you guys have on any or all of the welds.....thanks alotjustin
Reply:on your 7018 down hand turn it up and spray it a bit with a very small weave to wash the sides in and wash away the slag.
Reply:For 7018 open root don't you switch polarities? Maybe someone can confirm or deny this I just for some reason think you do. I did this with pipe but it was a while back and I cant remeber if im making this up or if this is what we did
Reply:7018 downhand??
Reply:All plate test I've ever done from 308 to 7018 has been open root. However I've never heard of anybody or any test doing it downhill. Is their a specific purpose to this or what? I've always been under the impression that you should never run 7018 downhill and all jobs i've ever been on its an automatic termination if caught doing so. I know you can run 6010 downhill, which can be usefull. I would make sure that you have a good prep on your plate and that you dont get to carried away with your gap. Your going to pretty much take the root or most of it out from the backside when you back grinde or gouged it out. Your CWI might want to see you break down the back side of the plates with your root pass so make sure that your have just enough gap for that. As for filling it up, it should be just like a normal test. anyways let us know how the test goes.
Reply:I've welded E7018 downhill for a root pass on a tank construction job.  I was surprised at first too.  7018 welds like crap downhill.  The slag will run ahead of you no matter what you do.  I found that pulling a longer arc for a second, when you hit a slag deposit, will burn it away and let you keep welding.  You'll still trap slag in the weld, but at least you won't have to restrike.ALL of these root passes were later arc-gouged and re-welded from the root side of the joint.  There were 2 reasons given for doing this:1 - 6010 roots are too thin and are likely to crack.  This means more repairs later on.  The 7018 root is just there to give you something to weld on top of for the joint fill and cap.  The E7018 root is tougher and able to hold until the normal vertical up fill and cap is completed.2 - After the joint is welded out(vertical up), the joints are distorted.  Gouging the root out and re-welding 1 or 2 passes on the root side pulls the distortion back out of the joint and makes the transition from one plate to the next straight and smooth. Reply:Just completed my 7018 open Roots...    2g  3g 4g...No Back gouge...   No back grind...   It was a pain in the Butt..Had to do the 2g twice...  Getting the results today...  wish me luck...
Reply:i was lucky towork  with a good pipeliner who put in gorgeous downhill 6010 / 7010 beads. i asked him how to run 7018 downhill and he just said    don't ...
Reply:First thing I'd do would be to ask to see a welding procedure for it.
Reply:uphill open butt 7018 is very achievable, used to do 6" 5g test this way, run it in straight polarity and hold very tight arc length, 7018 down, best i can say is good luck! you have to get the metal ahead of the slag. try lots of heat with angling the rod towards the puddle to help somewhat hold the slag back, 7010 is more of the rod designed for this.
Reply:Passed a 2" heavy wall 6G open root 7018 for a nuke a month ago.  About a nickel's worth of land and gap, 3/32" 7018 at about 70 amps, reverse polarity.  Keep a tight arc, watch your rod angle and don't open a key hole.  If you do, you're pretty much screwed.  All uphill and allowed 3/32" push through. Got four perfectly clean side bends.  Will admit to being a little nervous.  Had never done 7018 for a root before, nukes were always TIG for open roots, never any 6010!"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:ran 7018 downhill root w/fill and cap uphill x-ray 6" tube.  2g & 5g open root also on 2" tube side bend. open root plate downhill all the way out both x-ray and bend test. reverse polarity on all. The open root downhill plate used to be quite common for certs for welding ductwork. the 7018 open root uphand on 2" tube was for window welds. If you are confident in you're welding skills you will find that 7018 runs great in any direction you want to point it. with good x-ray or bend results.      "boilermakers local 169"  revpol
Reply:got my test results back Today!!Got my 2G 7018 Open Root Test passed!!!!!!Dam hardest test I ever took....Thank God thats over....

Reply:We Ran uphill 7018 1/8th Rod with a 1/8th open root for our 3g...Horizontal 7018 1/8th Rod   1/8th open root for our 2g as well...The Over head was double bevel closed root with Back GrindThen 711 Front Arc Flux Core for the Second pass and Cap.. all 3/8ths Plate..Personally I think the Horizontal was the hardest to pass...I have 2 More Guys to Retest today and hopefully our shop will be done..

Reply:On the horizontal did you guys lay the first bead on the bottom for a good shelf? It did better for me than laying the first on top.
