I know this isn't directly a welding question but I thought that there are a lot of people on here with metal working experience so I thought I would give this a shot and see what everyone thought. I have had this idea for sometime about getting a small, bench top hydraulic press for various reasons/projects. I figure I don't need a large floor model for what I would use it for so that is why I am interested in a small one. I have seen press breaks specifically designed for use with hydraulic presses and I have also seen kits for the DIY's to build one. The thing is, I have not seen any for use with a press under 20 ton. The press I am thinking about getting is six ton, so the press break itself is to big to even fit between the the uprights. Anyhow I thought that this would be a fun/interested project to try and do sometime but I not sure what kind of steel would work for this. I was thinking about just using two pieces of thick bar stock, with a bevel on each, welded or bolted together to form the bottom v-shaped die and a piece for the top ground on either side to form point for the top. Would the typical bar stock at a local home improvement store be sufficient for this?  Would the metal have have to be heat treated? And any ideas on how wide the top v-shaped pounch should be to help reduce any deflection at the ends?Last edited by btrswt25; 10-05-2011 at 06:44 PM.
