quick question for you seasoned professionals, how many stringers go on the cap, when welding 2" xtra xtra heavy wall? what about 2" xtra heavy wall?thanks for the help
Reply:If you are taking a weld test, look at the WPS.It depends on the size of the welding rod and what profile you are aloud. When it comes to capping, it takes what it takes to achieve, but not exceed the profile limits.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
Reply:The number of passes on a cap varies I've found depending on who you are and where you're at.  We always puddle capped everything years ago.We talk about number of beads.  "3-bead or 2-bead?".  I've been required to have 5-beads showing on the cap. Then there is the orientation of the beads showing.  Side by side,  and the old favorite "one on each side then one down the middle".Material has thickness and is usually referred to as the decimal.  Standard 2" pipe I think is .219 wall.  Your "xtra xtra heavy" I'm guessing at .500 wall.  Welding test I've taken on 2" x .500 wall were 45degree Arkansas bell-hole, restricted-access,  heliarc root and hot-pass, 7018 3/32" out, and a 3-bead cap (if I remember right  )Good luck man
Reply:I took a 2'' xtra xtra mig down root, flux cored up and was minimum 3 bead cap.
Reply:At school we test on 6in scheldule 40 and we use 5p+ for the root, 1/8 7018 for the hot pass, and 3/32 7018 for ths cap we run 3 beads for the cap. Slowhand what exactly is an arkansas bellhole I have heard the term before but I'm not really sure what it is.Lincoln 225 RangerSa200            01 dodge  3500 welding rig
Reply:I've heard southern boomers refer to it, same as 6GAll the weld test I've taken, I was never given a stringer #But I was always told how far the weld could extend past the bevel and weld profile height.Normally I was told 1/16" past edge of bevel and 1/8" high were my max tolerances. The weld slip states the rod, 6010 and /or 7018 and give you a choice of 3/32" or 1/8"So depending on the size of the rod, it takes what it takes as long as you don't exceed profile tolerances.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
Reply:thanks for the insight.  the wall looked thicker than .500; i didn't measure but it looked closer to .750testing tomorrow morn, wasn't sure if there was a specific requirement or not.  i do know its a tig root and hot pass then 7018 the rest of the way out.
Reply:I have a few sets of coupons that we are required to use.Yours may be different, but here are a couple of blurry pics with phone. The dimensions are :2 3/4" OD, 1 7/16" ID and 5/8" wallThe inside wall is machined so now the wall is roughly over 1/2"Bevel is 50 degree angle and no land (feathered edge)We set a 3/32" gap, tig root and hot pass then 7018 cap.CWI inspects fit-up with tacks; root then cap. No grinder (file & brush)Root has to be flush or better (3/32 max height). 3/32 tungsten w/ 3/32 filler wire.Once completed, it's X-rayed then cut coupons @ approx 10; 2; 4 & 8 o'clock for root & face  side bends.Like I said, yours may be different. I didn't pull out the WPS, just going off memory.Hope this give you some idea.....Good luck  Attached ImagesLast edited by skelley521; 09-25-2011 at 03:56 PM.Semper FiJesus may have been a Carpenter, but his dad was a Millwright" A grinder and a can of paint, will make a welder what he aint' "I've done so much, with so little, for so long, that now I can do anything with nothing!
Reply:The angle didn't sound right, so I checked it.50 or 130 however you look at it.These are the actual coupons from the contractor. The hypotenuse is slightly over 3/4". I didn't break out the calipers. Reply:I did the 2" XX for my 6g and it took a 3 bead cap with 3/32 7018...I was running hot at fast around 103.
Reply:Oh, I see you have a 50* bevel, might take another bead?
Reply:Ya that's what I heard it called but I also heard the arkansas bellhole was another name for the 6GR and i also heard it was a term used on the mainline for when the pipe was lying in the ground so I wasn't for sure exactly.Lincoln 225 RangerSa200            01 dodge  3500 welding rig
Reply:Arkansas Bell-hole is a term I've heard for years.  What I've always taken it to mean is.....A pipe welding test were the coupons are positioned on a 45degree angle. (6G).Good luck
Reply:so i failed the test for too much build-up on the cap.before you start the "cap" how far below flush are you guys leaving the fill?do you leave the fill flush with the OD of the pipe? 1/16th below?thanks in advance for any advice/insight/help
Reply:SMAW, I used to shoot for 1/16 with 3/32 rod, 3/32 with 1/8 rod.  All personal preference.
Reply:Run filler passes until you achieve 1/16 inch underfill, then cap her off... so you failed for excessive weld reinforcement? That`s a bummer...  They allowed what 1/8 inch ?... Im with them on the Arkansas bell hole, its simply a pipe welded on a 45 degree angle. .Hope that helps. As for stringers on the 6 g cap I was taught to use three, but whatever it takes.
Reply:Left hand side of my Schedule 80 test 3 Beads but 160 i usually loosin it up and go 4 or 5AMBIDEXTROUS TIG WELDER

Reply:on my 2" sch 160 with 6010 root/7018 fill/cap i will run 2 passes for my cap. I essentailly take my final fill pass extremely close to flush. I then weave my first cap pass just soo i kiss the top edge of the bevel. I then take a nice rounded 1/4" grinding disc and grind a groove the whole circumference and run a final fast stringer. The only reason i do this is they wont allow a single weave which i can do. As for tig root'd heavy walled pipes i use the same process but use 3 passes.
