tig on older spoolmate 200

I was wondering if its possible to do tig welding with my miller spoolmate 200 welder, I see scratch start tig torches on ebay all the time , could the welder do tig with out any other attachements or would i need to get something else for it to work... ? What about alum tig?

Reply:The short answer is no.  According to the manual, found on millerwelds.com the spoolmate 200 is a CV constant voltage welder like most MIG welders.  It is designed to maintian a certain amount of voltage accross the outputs of the welder which you can adjust.  The aperage floats with wirespeed.A tig welder is a constant current (CC) like stick welders their power supplies are disigned to maintain a certain amount of amperage accross the ouput termanals.  You can scratch start tig with most stick welders.  To do aluminum for most practical purposes you need an AC welder and a HF (high frequency) unit.

Reply:Yes you could run DC scratch start tig off of your thunderbolt.  In order to run AC tig you would need a high freq box.....I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:thanks for the info, are the high frec boxes expensive, and what are the weldes that u does with a scratch tig like, how would u control the heat, I mean is it harded like that.
Reply:To scratch start tig you set the heat at the machine just like you are stick welding.  High freq boxes are around a grand new but can be found for half that for a good used box.  You just have to look around.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
