I worked on running TIG welds this weekend and this was about the best I could get.I am using 3/32 Tung. 3/32 Filler with 15CFM Argon Flow, 150 Amps, running about half pedal or a little more, the puddle was about the side of a pencil eraser.I cleaned everything with a flap disc to bare metal and then Acetone. Cleaned the filler rod with Acetone also. Not sure why the welds are not shinny, it may be too much heat, but on the back side no burn through, you can just see were the bead was run and the heat.Maybe I need a smaller filler rod or Tung?I am also having lits of problem with Fillet Welds, Always too large and not consistent. Thanks in advance! Reply:Yeah, it looks like you had it too hot. I get better results with the heat set at a level where I have to wait a couple seconds for the puddle to form between each dip.
Reply:Thats like trailer hitch tubing..It dont really yield "shiney" welds in the first place. Its "Hot Rolled" steel..Cold rolled steel will give the shiney results with some wire brush action after.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:On Saturday I was welding the same welds and material using the pulse dial and I noticed a few of them had shine. So I figured it was heat related because in the photo from today, I turned off the pulse and tried it.I thought maybe I had too much heat also because once I get the puddle formed, I keep the pedal down to where I can maintain a constant puddle and forward movement (like in FCAW and GMAW) and just dip the filler rod about 1 time per second.Do you think that style is too aggressive and I should let the puddle take a little time to form resulting in having to slow down or even a quick pause in movement? Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:Like I showed everyone at class yesterday..Want a 1/8" weld?Hold the tungestion 1/8" away..Establish puddle..Dip about 1/2" worth of 70S-2 (1/16 wire)Move ahead about 1/8..Repeat..Repeat..Repeat..That method will make everything more "even"But you must use the pedal to keep the puddle the same width as you go...You'll get it.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I think it looks good. Maybe you could use less heat and go slower. It helps me keep control.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Is that galvanized? Looks like galvanized crystals. If it is you need to clean inside and out and several inches away from the weld. It will suck up the zinc from the inside of the tubing.Your welds look good, you just need a bit more time behind the hood. Better than my TIG welds that is for sure. You do have a bit of cutting and could probably use a tad more filler, less heat, or quicker travel. But nothing that a little practice can't fix!
Reply:The material is 1 x 1 11 gauge Mild Steel Square Tubing. I used a flap disc and cleaned 1/2" over the are to be welded. I also beveled the flat edges.I think I will try for less heat and a 1/6" filler rod and go a little slower...Thanks!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com! |
