Hi allI have just bought another property similar to the one in the picture I have just renovated and sold. In the old one I put up a timber picket fence, which looked the part, but started to warp with the cheap un seasoned timber available nowdays. My new house which we move into in about 2 months time is a similar style to this one, and I wanted to put up a fence out front that stands  out from the crowd and says "LOOK AT ME !!". I want it to be all steel (sick of twisted timber), I want it to suit the style of house as this timber one does, but not be what everyone else has.The house is only about 300 metres from the beach so I am going to have to treat it really well prior to painting to slow the rust down a bit.Ideally it will be about 1.2 - 1.5 metres high. Have some good solid posts in between the panels. Probably about 1.8 - 2.4 metres between panels, and overall about 5 panels wide.I like the scalloped effect of my timber fence, but that is not the be all end all.I would really appreciate any input of ideas, or a site where I can look at other fence panels and come up with a new design.  The completed fence will either be spray painted or powder coated. I don't mind if the design incorporates more than one color (probably better looking if it is multi colored). The idea is to have a GREAT looking fence that stops people in their tracks, has them knocking on my door saying "Where the heck did you get that from ?", and I can proudly say "I made it ! Would you like me to make you one ?"Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.Last edited by eyspy; 07-09-2009 at 07:41 PM.

Reply:I know it's fun to talk about, but I've never asked anyone in my life how to design something.  I might put out a design to have it discussed, but that's as far as it goes. You gotta welder, and the talent to use it,  the sky's the limit.  You can cook up something good on your own.  Asking someone else ruins the originality of your design.  Go crazy, and then worry about what people have to say.  It's your own unique work."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Denrep, I would rather talk about the car, but that is hijacking this thread. Besides, unless you have 15 or 20 of those grill guards at 2.4 meters apiece..........Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear
Reply:Here's one that looks nice and was not hard to build at all. The cast iron panels came from King. Cast iron panels come in a bunch of different looks, are cheap to buy, and are easy and fast to work with. They can make a quite striking look to hand rails or fences. Attached Images
Reply:Bob, your decorative stuff is out of this world. You have the eye. These guys have to start thinking outside the box. When I used to make furniture,  I used to look at catalogues, and magazines for a rough idea.  Then I made it my own.  I like Shaker, and Early Colonial.  Because I was the guy doing it, I could mix the two, and the things I liked too.  It came out out to be my own individual thing."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:First off the rank:gclamp - A meter is a bit over 3 foot.Farmersamm - I did not explain too well. I am after inspiration, not somebodys actual design for me to copy. When I look at lot's of pictures, I get the inspiration then adapt it to suit my needs. Sometimes I can concoct my own creations, other times I need to look at others work.Bob - That is one nice looking fence, but I guess any bozo can buy a cast panel and whack it up. I like things that are created from scratch and not just erected. That would look nice at my old plave though.I like the idea of doing my own work and will post up pics happily for all to critique when completed, till then I will keep looking at designs till my 'OWN' creation appears in my mind.Cheers People .....
Reply:Check out www.kingmetals.com.They have all sorts of stuff like that. They even print a "Design Ideas" book that gives parts numbers on all elements used in a given design.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Eyspy,A mate of mine who lives two streets away from me has a great metal fence. I'm not a traditionalist, so I really like it. It's at the front of a 1920s bungalow.Go to Google maps and enter 19 grove street marrickville. Then hit street view. (For some reason it says the place is No 18, but ignore that.) You can zoom in and outNow, the pic isn't great, so I'll have to describe it to you. It's thin flats of steel about 50mm wide by maybe 3mm thick. They have been hand bent, welded, and then galvanised. It sort of looks like a sqyashed spider web. It's a great looking fence and definitely unique.ScottYeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
Reply:G'day Eyespy,I would of thought for a front fence of the design concept you want would be more of a wrought iron project and being a bit of a traditionalist I mean being done by a blacksmith not purchased from Bunnings, Mitre 10, etc, basically nothing from China/Indonesia (please insert your own expletive).Seeing your home a wrought iron fence would set it off a treat.Cheers & Beers
Reply:I once came across a plethora of clutch disks for VS2 transmissions.  Welded them together to make a fence. This fence is made from panels from a factory I liquidated. The trick for me is to find lots of similar things for cheap then work from there.  I don't have that artsy gene, but I do have the cheapskate one.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
Reply:Here's some examples of what's possible : http://www.artisticgateconcepts.com/gallery.aspxhttp://enrique.artmetal.com/architecture/index2.htmhttp://www.art-metal.com/GardenG.htmlAll you need is money, talent, creativity, skill, tools, and time.Especially time. Figure it will take you 4 times longer than you planned on. Especially if you do it all from scratch, and don't use any prefab stuff."We live in an age when unnecessary things are our only necessities. "   - Oscar WildeMaxstar STL150Eagle CPM30 Bender
Reply:Well, being a cheapskate myself, why not use discarded bicycle frames? This is a gate on a bicycle shop:And a decorative garbage can cover:

Reply:The pictures I wanted to find were on the order of SpyGuy's; except that the fence was welded-up from all auto bumpers and grilles.I have another pic of one that's all drive shafts... thousands. When the pictures show up I'll post ‘em.Meanwhile, pictures of pictures: Attachment 35732Attachment 35733I can't remember where either of these were. The tire panels were being pre-fabbed and painted.Didn't somebody post Graceland's gates a while ago?Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 08-24-2009 at 09:48 AM.
