Ok got a couple of hours on a mm250(built a rear bummper tool box and helped a friend build some pump frames) and mm210(a little auto body repair and building work), picked up a MM vintage. A little stick time also. First: I always try so get the settings off the placard inside the machine. I set them, and they don't seem right, so I mess aroud a couple of times and after about four tries I wind up nearly at the chart settings ( off just a little ). Does my welder need to warm up? Second:I found a PDF file on MIG, I think it was British, and can't find it any more. Anyone have a link? Or just a good link on MIG settings? (MM) Could we make this a sticky? (don't you just hate New guys?)Third:I can usually cut, grind, and start over if I don't like my results. But sometimes you have a money weld, and you don't want to screw it up.Can anyone set me up with a regiment or syllabus I can practice with? Don't have time for the community collage( would love to go ).PS: This site is Kick A$$.Last edited by aandy767; 08-21-2007 at 12:34 AM.
Reply:MM Vintage and MM210 will weld MUCH better than your MM250.  If you have a choice, I'd would think about getting rid of the MM250 since they're known for having difficult arc starts and is not known as one of Millers better performers.MM Vintage will do everything the MM250 will do only much better in every way. They're both rated for the same output.  MM Vintage and MM210 are both very good welders.   MM Vintage is supposed to be like the MM 200, only it is in a newer chassis.Millermatic Passport PlusMillermatic 200Millermatic 350P with PythonXMT 304 /w S-64 feeder and 12RCDynasty 300 DXVictor O/APremier Power Welder for my trail junk.
Reply:I guess I wasn't clear. I've used a 210 and 250, but have a vintage. BTW are you a mudder?
Reply:Not a mudder, but I hang out on www.ih8mud.com which is a web site for Land Cruiser owners.  I like rock crawling with my old FJ40.MM Vintage is a great welder.  Start by looking at the door chart for your setting.  Spend time and practice on scrap metal before you do any welding on your project.  You'll get your technique down with practice and time.Millermatic Passport PlusMillermatic 200Millermatic 350P with PythonXMT 304 /w S-64 feeder and 12RCDynasty 300 DXVictor O/APremier Power Welder for my trail junk.
Reply:The little placard inside the door is all well and good as long as you are using the exact gas, wire, stickout, gun angle etc that they used back at the factory.  If not then the little placard is useless. In order to help you determine the parameters the machine should be set at you need to provide more info such as, gas type, wire type and brand, wire size, base material thickness, base material type etc.Remember not all metals, electrodes, gases or welds are created equal.  Welding is not an art, it is a science and when that science is applied correctly the results can be phenomenal.  Don't just "fool around" with the knobs, any old idiot welder can do that.  Take the time to learn the science and the welding will be easy.Nobody's perfect, I'm a nobody, therefore I am perfect!
