I live in florida and this is a square tube ramp like for the boating industry.Does powder coating only get the outside of the square tubing? Wouldn't this mean the tubes will rust from the outside? If so, I will change my design to angle iron so the powder will reach every part of the material.Has anybody else came across this problem before?
Reply:Hmmm, if your design doesnt have any holes or open ends, you wont need to worry about the insides rusting...[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:You can ask your powder coater if they can do an iron phosphate dip. It makes a good substrate for the powder and is a corrosion inhibitor.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:If the tube was not too long the inside could be coated or a special gun could be made to go inside.  The power is electrically chages for it would cover the inside just like the outside. One problem is how to hold it or attach the ground wire without messing up a small place in the finish.have funTom
Reply:when a piece is powder coated it is only done on the outside. to prevent interior corrosion the ends have to be capped and plastic push in caps will fail. the best way to cap tubing and pipe is to make a end piece and weld it all the way around. then there is no way for anything to get inside.think of that piece as a soup can, if the top is left off what will happen when it is turned over............
Reply:I know that in older boat trailers they use to use round pipe, some were galv. and others were painted.  All were welded closed end.  Those that I saw in later years all had rusted from the inside out.  Hope this helps you.  Bob
Reply:Get it hot gal dipped before you get it powdercoated.Done it before and it has been trouble free.
Reply:If isnt galvanized 1st before powder coating it will rust out in about 5 years, I am not sure how cold galvinizing would work but thinking of doing it on a gate I built before powder.
Reply:Been told by my powdercoat dude that cold gal wont work well. Not a good enough bond and may/will peel in time.
Reply:Had a self-made 6' stair hand rail of sq. tube for my place on the beach powder coated.  It was sealed, with caps welded on all exposed ends.  The power coater used a rust resistant primer at extra cost.  When I got it back, I noticed that one of the caps on the bottom was drilled through.  When asked why, they said they have to do that to ensure a problem-free coating.  When the piece is heated to bake on the coating, the air inside the piece expands and any pinhole leak will cause a pit in the coating due to escaping air. Reply:LOL and now moisture has a way of condensing inside! At this point would you use epoxy or a jbweld type product for that drilled hole Dmaxer?AC-180 Lincolnwelder circa '50's
Reply:Hello Pyro - i have built many tunnel hull aluminum boats and trailers and always powder coated the boat and trailer. If it is a tube of any sort it needs to be sealed before coating , i have never had a problem with a sealed tube while baking. The only issue with powder coating is - it will flake off and start rusting if it is hit hard or scatched deep, it has a hard shell on the metal that is brittle. Never seen it rust from inside out unless it had a pin-hole or crack that would let oxygen into the tube. We also build a lot of equipment to go offshore in the oilfield and if the size is not to large we have them hot dipped galvanized , on the dipped items you Must have a hole for the air to escape.
Reply:the guy only says 'like the boating industry' he didn't say that it is an item for the marine industry.  frankly i think he'd have more luck having it shot with a two part epoxy.   if it's only rain he's worried about i wouldn't even bother with that.if it is marine, and it is a ramp, why doesn't he make it out of aluminum like everyone else's ramp.  well, maybe not everyones but by the time he goes through the coating process a couple of times i'll bet aluminum will be looking pretty good.  op can't know much, powder coating angle iron framework can be a bear;  corner's can be tough.i'm thinking he needs to put a little more thought and research into his project. it would probably have helped if he shed a little more light on the nature of the job, you know, so people wouldn't waste their time speculating about what the heck he is making.

Reply:Good luck getting the powder coating to stick well to galvanizing.   I learned my lesson on this several times.   Thankfully after the first i was smart enough to insulate my bottom line from their unpractical ideas.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
