Any suggestion on making stainless and copper stick. I am making a ring and need to stick stainless to copper. Both pieces about are about 1/8 inch. All I need it small tacks. Silver solder has been strong enough or worked good.

Reply:what seems to be the problem with the silver soldier?when working with dis-similars there has to be a filler metal or bonding material that is compatable to both. in certain situations the filler material or bonding product has to be more compatable with the inferior compared to the superior. if this is something for an item that is decorative soldering is fine. if it is something that requires preasure or is something critical do some homework and get it right the first time.any questions contact me atwww.bernieswelding.netWELCOME HOME TO ALL VIET-NAM VETERANS
Reply:I have been able to silver solder stainless and copper but in this situation it is a ring and you can only heat one spot at a time. The flux will also corrode before I get silver on all sides. The silver tends to run through the joint and pools on top of the copper. It does stick together but not perfect, plus I really don't want silver on it.. I would rather tig. I am going to try silicon bronze. |
