Hey guys.  I am need of the mad skills of a machinist, with also CNC Plasma table capabilities to bid on some projects for me.  More details will be following, just need to find someone on here who is capable of, and wants to do this type work.  Local source didn't pan out, so I am looking for help from you guys.  If you are interested, PM me with your phone number and we'll talk about it.  I know I can't pin you to a $$$ amount, but ball park +/- $100 would be great.  I will mail you the template.  You supply the steel.  Doesn't make sense to ship the steel to you.  I'll cover all shipping. The first part is the first picture.  This is a wooden template that will be mailed to you.  Need 1" thick steel, the two outside holes are 2" with very tight tolerances, and the center hole is yet to be determined.  Need 2 of these.  The p[late is 30 3/4 long at longest point, and 5 1/4 wide at the widest.  The middle hole depends on the next project...The second part will be milled from solid steel billet, probably 2 1/2-3" diameter.  Drilled out for a shaft that will connect the two plates on the first picture, then milled for bearings.Third will be the part that connects the 2 plates. If you are familiar with motorcycle fabrication, you will recognize these as being motorcycle fork trees, but on a much larger scale.  This is a monster motorcycle.First picture is the wooden template. The rest are pictures of the build so far.  It's been sitting too long and needs to be completed.Details on the build: Blown 350 engine, hydro steering, rear tire is 76"x50" 32" wheel. That's Mike standing next to the rear tire.  He's 5'10".  In case you ever wondered...  It takes 30 minutes to put 5lbs of air in that tire. Reply:It might help if you explain what you mean by 'tight tolerances' ; is that in thousandths, or tenths (of a thousandth)? Is that for just the diameters, or the distances too?  Also, any particular steel in mind? I don't see where the CNC is needed; as I understand it, this project is just to build one, not to go into production, right?
Reply:My 1st thought is that it looks like the link assembly for an excavator bucket. Depending on the finish you want you might be able to rough cut and weld in bushings to get a "machined" bore. Some guys "rough" is nicer tham manys finished work.

Reply:Looks like you guys are building a monster trike. Thats a huge triple clamp you have mocked up in wood. On a normal motorcycle the outer holes would have a pinch bolt arrangement to facilitate install and removal of the front fork tubes. I take it the forks will also be custom for this beast. Would like to see picture when it's all done. DaKK
Reply:Parts that large can easily be made by hand.  I don't think a press fit would be necessary or desireable on something that large.  On something that large, if you do a press fit and are a little off, you will be way off at the end of the forks.  A little wiggle room comes in handy.  Rather than pressing in the fork tubes, you could weld a flange to the ends and bolt them in allowing for adjustment.
Reply:Good ideas.  I didn't even think of the pinch fit.  That sounds even better.  Ok, so now I need someone who can cut this piece out cleanly, thin cut from the outer edge to the outer holes.  Drill through the edge, and tap some threads on the other side.Anyone?  Could be some extra money for you.  I will take care of all postage, and the cost of the steel, and your labor.  I just need it done. It's not what you can buy, it's what you can build.
Reply:you're a weldor right?  All the weldor's I know are also fabricators.
Reply:grab a torch, a file, and finish the holes with a drill hone.  as for the pinch kerf cut with a hack saw and drill bolt holes.pretty easy stuff.  don't need a computer or a plasma.  pm me your number and i may help you.  i live south of you.  i don't understand what is difficult about this.  ???
