Do you get "Aphenol Aggravation"?It is when switching between welding processes that you have to remove the remote plug (to foot pedal), the screwing in of the sleeve, the unscrewing! 30 seconds with a hacksaw or "zip" wheel, a twist with a screwdriver, done simple plug in and out. Yes, there will be some that worry about it unplugging, but I would rather it unplug occasionally, than to deal with the "screwing around" every time.Just my opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:At work (not welding) I work with an electronics rack that has about 50 Amphenols and I find them a PITA. They do provide reliable connection but they are tedious to unscrew and the Al threads tend to gall. I rub a soap bar on them. Reply:Aphenol Aggravation. I agree, you're not wiring a space craft.Did you ever price a replacement plug?
Reply:Ha!I'm in moderator-mode...I saw Aphenol and thought you were trying to sell drugs. Yes, I have purchased one...whew...like $30 for a nothing little 5 conductor plug. I thought they were made of gold or something.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I agree, aphenols a way overkill for most everything they get put on. Military equipment is fine, but a pita on welding equipment. Plus they are damn expensive.Good solution to cut the threaded collar off!The black pastic AMP connectors, by Tyco Electronics, are much easier to screw on and off, they have a big coarse thread and tighten up with one revolution.Allied is a good source for AMP and Amphenol connectorshttp://www.alliedelec.com/Search/Sea...05&Ntk=Primary
Reply:They probably get put on by the manufacturer because it is easier to use one tat meets the worst case circumstance than have several options. I have been in situations where there was definately the need to have the thing screwed in tight. Not many.Did you consider a second slit and putting a circlip around the thing? Make it reinstallable if needed? |
