I am now taking a welding in college. So I know very little if any at all. We are welding 1/2in plate with 1/8in 6010 rods at about 90amps. Now to may question. Friend wants side rails and a gate on a small trailer. looking at 2in x 2in angle iron 3/16 thick. What stck should I use? I can build gate ok but how should I weld the hindge with out welding it closed? In College for welding.Learning 6010 first.passed butt weld, lap, lap multipass, t-weld I have a Campbell Hausfeld Farmhand 125 (only used fluxcore sofar).
Reply:For the hinge, put the gate in place, tack the hinge. Try it make sure it works. Then weld it.Good luckDavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Try E6013, it's very easy or E7018 if you like a challenge. 3/32" rod will work well as you are learning, 1/8" is good also.City of L.A. Reply:RORO72 How do you like your farmhand 125? TSC stores around here had the fluxcore no gas model for 168.00 but I don't know anyone that has one.
Reply:farmhand is ok I figure I might Like it more now learning to weld. Could get a desent bead everynow and then. but all projects before could be ground down smooth before now.I need to weld properly now I am making a career change to welding (at 35).In College for welding.Learning 6010 first.passed butt weld, lap, lap multipass, t-weld I have a Campbell Hausfeld Farmhand 125 (only used fluxcore sofar).
Reply:If you are using a hinge bought from a machine shop or such, be sure to weld one side to the trailer and the other to the tailegate. You would be surprised how often this happens.Bill
Reply:The best rod to use for this job is the one you have the most experience with and are the most comfortable using. Utilities trailers seem like simple easy projects, and they are. However, there is alot of liability involved with them. A rail or a gate is serious business, if the welds fail while going down the road, (and they can) you are gonna be liable if someone gets hurt or worse killed. You said you "probably" can weld the hinge OK. In my opinion "probably" doesn't cut it on anything going on the road. Some may say I am being overly concerned, but its the unknowing passers by that will be at risk. Please don't take this comment as an insult but if you have to ask these questions I really don't think you should do that job until you have a little more experience under your belt.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Sorta off topic, but not. My dad was driving down the road and a lawn chair blew out of the back of his truck. It just happened to hit an off duty cop's personal car. He was in a pile of Sh*t.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
