Ok, just as I thought I had it figured out and ran 2 of the nicest TIG Fillet beads on steel, I decided to run another only 3" in length -vs- the previous 2" runs. I was welding on .083 MS with 100 Amps and a 3/32 Tung. with 1/16" filler. The puddle stared out very nice and so did the bead, about 1" into the weld I noticed the puddle stopped moving forward smoothly like it was and it kind of split in the middle and would not move. I had to back up a bit and work it to get it to move.Any ideas why?I also noticed these weird red dots spinning around in the puddle from time to time, is that normal? Thanks in advance!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:You need to manipulate the puddle and keep it bridged. Don't know about the red dots flying around, have you taken any acid lately?
Reply:Red dots are impurities from the base metal or filler. Slag if there is such a thing in tig. As far as losing your puddle, More heat and more filler? The book sez you should be welding ABOUT 10 inches per minute flat. Did you have good fitup?DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:nevermind, wrong t hread
Reply:sounds like you may of been to cold, or there was a slight gap. Also .083 with 100 amps should be on the hot side, so I doubt heat is a problem but you never knowHave we all gone mad?
Reply:clean your metal
Reply:Thanks for all the replies!Because I am doing a fillet weld I bumped up the amps from 90 to 100. The base metal was flap disced, acetone and the fit up is very tight.I may have backed off the heat once I got going trying to just hold the puddle because in the past I noticed towards the end of the weld my heat got hotter and the weld got larger, I also noticed I may have lost my forward angle and tilted my hand instead if pushing forward.I will do more practice this weekend. Thanks for your input!Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
