Well, long story short, I had to sell my welding set up about 4 years ago due to a divorce. It was nothing special, just a Lincoln (I think 170 or 175) set up with gas, but I loved that machine. Lately, I've had the need to weld a couple of things. I'm experince level is just a self taught weekend warrior and I'm looking to the pros to help. I'm not going to be doing anything crazy with the welder. Right now I am looking at the Millermatic 211 MVP, just becuase of the dual voltage and I pretty sure that this MM211 would blow away my old Lincoln. I like the fact that I can take it to my buddies house and help him weld anything and then if I need to go bigger, I can plug it into the 240 volts. I have a couple of questions. How nice of a bead will the MM 211 lay down. My other question is, should I get the MM211 or increase my budget to the Hobart Ironman 230 or the MM212 or something equivlent. What more would I get with the Ironman 230 or MM212, ie, nicer bead, better gun, longer cords etc. Any help and all inputs would much be appreciated.
Reply:It pretty much comes down to what type and thickness of material you plan on welding. Also if you want to do Spray transfer as well as Short circuit transfer you will need a 250 amp class machine or larger. Reply:JBM hit the nail on the head. You can't use amps you didnt buy. The 252 is a light industrial machine while the 211 is a price point and feature thing for that range. The 211 and 212 are good machines, get the 252 with a spool gun and you'll never look back or wish you had gone bigger to start with. Reply:If you're even considering used, look at the Millermatic 200. It's 240 volt only, but it has the same output as many of the 250 amp machines, they used to advertise them differently back then. Many say it's the best MIG Miller ever built because it was at a time where the designers were left unbridled as far as finance and built the best machine they could. I got mine with a spool gun, running gear, a GA gun and the spot control panel for $299 on eBay.
