I picked up a Weldcraft TIG torch, and I have a few questions about one of the connectors on the back of the hose.  It has the regular lead connection and gas hook up, but looks like it has a remote power feed for adjusting the amperage.  My machine is a Lincoln Invertech v250-S 250a DC welder, but I'm not sure this specific connection will mate up. Any ideas??  Thanks!
Reply:Lucky dog!  Lincoln has the schematic for a 6 pin plug in any tig owners manuals.  DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Yeah, but my Invertech uses a pin style that's different from the one on the torch.  My question is, is this some sort of set up to control the amperage at the torch body?  The torch body has a pivoting switch I assumed controlled only the gas flow, but will it control amperage as well?  Here's a few pics...
Reply:That is a start switch.... I think.  Its not a sliding control for the heat.  It turns on the gas, HF start and welding power.  Weldingdepot.com has the correct plug.  You can get it from lincoln too.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:You can also get a plug to match the power supply at Allied, http://www.alliedelec.com/.If the power supply connection is black plastic, it an AMP, if it is green military metal, it is an AMPHENOL.If your torch switch has a contactor and current control, 2 pins are for the contactor, and the other 3 are for the potentiometer current control, your manual will show the pin-outs.  The potentiometer on the torch (if you have one) must be the correct rating to match the power supply, look at the manual for the foot control that is used with your power supply.  For example my welder needs a 10K ohm, 2 watt pot.
Reply:Question is, will it need to be connected to work with my machine?  Or, can I simply plug in the DINSE connector, hook up the gas, leave the 5-pin plug unhooked, and start TIG welding?
Reply:I see that your hand control apparently only has the on-off switch. There is also another model that has on-ooff and a slide switch to vary the current. If your quesiton is how to use this with your machine, I would get a face panel connector (Male) to go into the machine and a female connector that matches your male connector on the cable. then you would need to jumper the two together with the appropriate pins conected. In your case, if you only have the on-off switch, I would think that it only uses two pins to engage the coil on the contactor inside. The Dinse connector would I presume control the power to the torch and the water return, unless it's like the Miller syncro machines which have no water connections. In miy case these are handled by a Q5WGT Dinse adapter that by passes both gas and water return so that you can use a water-cooled torch. I have a NOS vintage Lincoln hand Amptrol that has the standard Amphenol 6 pin connector (different from the one you are showing) and whenever I get around to ordering the connectors I'll make a jumper cable and then I can use the hand amptrol on my Miller Squarewave 200. The only issue is the cost of the connectors. They are not cheap. If you have a foot pedal that connects to the machine, you don't have to use that connector, just use the foot pedal to start the arc. Good luck!Last edited by gnm109; 10-30-2007 at 12:45 PM.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:I have the exact same torch on my TIG.
Reply:Ok, I figured it out.  The switch and subsequent plug will have no effect on my machine.  In fact, I could remove it all together if I wanted to.  My Invertech is a lift-start machine, and I don't need the switch to initiate an arc.  A foor or hand control would be nice, but certainly not required.  The only thing I don't like is the fact it doesn't have a gas valve, which will be fine for right now.
