Lets see them.I need to make some and am not sure what style to make.I want to make them wide enough to use for trailer building and am considering just building the ends with a 1' or so pipe on top so I can put any length pipe I want through it to make long horses.Anyone else done that? Got pictures? How do you like them?If I just make them solid and 6' wide or so they will have to be stored outside.I need them to be heavy duty.Suggestions???????
Reply:I wish I had picts of the ones used at the block plant to set the die heads on. Basically a 6" wide flange with 4" channel legs. If you think about how they usually build 2x4 saw horses from scratch thats what they looked like in steel. I have some barricade/ saw horse legs. Give me a couple of minutes to dig them out and I'll post up picts.I also have a set of cheap steel saw horses with adjustable legs I use on job sites. The adjustable legs makes it easy to work on uneven ground. A thought you might want to consider if keeping the sawhorses level is an issue where you work. When we worked on my buddies truck body, it would have been nice to have adj legs rather than keep shimming the horses to get it level again after we moved and repositioned it..
Reply:Ok here's the picts. These are made front 2"x 3/8" flat bar. They are designed to use a 2x6 as the top cross member and break down for storage. I stole the design from what the township uses on street barricades.I like them for when I need to block off an area, or need a really long set of saw horses say for painting lots of trim and such. I have used them as emergency scaffolding in a pinch, but if you were going to really load them I'd add a cross tie near the bottom and probably build the legs from angle or channel. You might be able to modify the design slightly and make a heavier set. Go to angle iron or channel for the legs, and use rect tube or channel for the top cross bar. A couple of thru bolts would lock the legs to the top rather than the angled wedge these use to grip the 2x6. Need a longer sawhorse, all you need to do is just get a longer chunk of top member. When finished unbolt the parts and they store easily in a small space. Attached Images
Reply:I don't have any pics of mine, but I can take a few it you want.  They are made out of 2x3 11ga tubing.  One end is an upside down T , and the other end is just a single leg.  They make contact with the ground on three points so they never wobble.  They are almost 5' long and can easily be picked up with one hand.  I use them to build my small trailers on, but they have supported semi trailers in the past without trouble.
Reply:DSW, I like those. That is a similar idea I had using pipe and adding different lengths of pipe between the ends.Boostinjdm,Please post your pictures.I only want to build these once so the more designs I see the better chances of me being happy with the final results.

Reply:Hadn't thought about pipe. You could use large dia. threaded rod on the legs as levelers if you wanted. Sort of like what they use on scaffolding to level it. You could make a pivioting foot on the bottom. probably won't need more than 2-4 " of adjustment.I used scaffold jack screws to make an adjustable V stand for my band saw to hold pipe etc on my uneven driveway when I cut.
Reply:Here's a pic.  There is 1/4" thick "feet" welded to the bottom of the T section to assure three point contact.  Threaded adjusters could be easily added to my design for adjusting for level.  I didn't do it, because I wanted them built fast, cheap, and solid.  When I plas cut sheets on them, I just go ahead and cut through the top of the tube.  When they get cut enough, I will just scrap them.  I still have about 400ft of this tube left over that was bought at scrap price. Reply:I'll get a battery in my digital and take a pic of mine.  They are about 8 ft wide and 3 ft or so high. I made my horses high so I could access underneath easily.   I drilled holes and welded nuts in the main top rail, then bolts to 6 inch C channel to serve for leveling in four corners.  I just built a 18 trailer with a 2ft dove tail 80 inches wide on the horses.  I use pneumatic tires with brakes on one end.  I lowered the trailer with an overhead hosit a little at a time on each end. I'll try and get the pics tonight, you'll have to excuse the surface rust, have not painted them yet.  Am currently getting ready to build a 6X10 trailer on the horses.  May give you some ideas.
Reply:Bob, Please disregard all the junk, hope it gives you some ideasprobably give you some ideas of what not to do.they work for me, hopefully I will get them painted soon.  The channel on the top allow me to adjust the hieght. Attached Images
Reply:There's a nice set posted on the Miller Board, in their "In the Shop" Gallery. I like the looks of those ones.http://www.millerwelds.com/interests...ct/2781694690/
Reply:I like the ones DSW posted better than the Miller ones.  Why?  It looks like DSW's use wood extension pieces instead of pipe.  Cutting new lengths of wood is cheap and easy, where pipe is harder.  And clamping something to a pipe is a bear.
Reply:Didn't have a dedicated picture of my horses but noticed the post and found them in the back ground of my lates project. pair are all aluminum and 70".  the one in the fore ground is part of a pair, they are acutually work platforms that have built in steps, they fold like and ironing board and are ajustable height from 18" to 50 ". They work great and carry quite a load . made by Husky.also aluminum,   I refer to them as the ironing boards and my sons know exactly what I mean.
