I have to weld a 1 1/4" Grade 5 Fine Thread Nut onto a piece of flat 1/2" steel.  I had to order the nuts, so I got them in plain steel and not coated.  What would be the best type of steel for welding to the grade 5 nut?  Thanks, Nick.

Reply:the guys in my shop coat the living daylights out of the threads with a nickle-based anit-sieze goop. we used to use it when assembling stuff in auto-tech class (nothing was ever run so don't waorry about safety). they say it works jsut as well as heat-sink gel.later,Andy
Reply:What if I am tigging the thing.  What type of filler rod would be best?
Reply:any mild steel filler (ER70) will work fine- MIG and TIG fillers are covered by the same standards
Reply:Didn't think about lubing the threads up.  I will try that and see how it goes.
Reply:since it will be plated, make sure to grind that junk off.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:I never seez the threads, then weld the nut with MIG, TIG or SMAW.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I ordered the nuts unplated so I don't have to do any grinding other than just cleaning them up.  They are fairly large nuts, I don't expect too much distorting.
Reply:I normally use 7018, but remember it won't be grade 5 after you weld it so no need in buying the high dollar nuts. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:grade 5 isnt high dollar, its pretty much standard.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:I weld whatever size I need right on down to 1/4 inch on a regular basis. Sure you always tack the heck out of nuts to make sure they don't rock sideways and you can't be shooting a bunch of spatter onto the threads, but that's about the sum total of issues. If you're like me and want to bury the sucker with filler then you'll need to run a bolt in there as a heat sink and make sure you don't blow the top rim away. Other than that, have fun..
Reply:If your going through all the trouble of welding a piece of soild and tapping it, why not just retap the fitting?I weld SS fittings all day from 1/8" NPT to 1 1/4" NPT and never had one come back because it was distorted.Have we all gone mad?
