I am building some parts for my neighbor's motorcycle, and one piece ideally should be tacked while the parts are on the bike, and then finished while off the bike.  I have never done any welding ON a vehicle before, and I am afraid of damaging electronics etc.  What do I need to do (besides having the ground cable as close as possible) to ensure I do not damage a vehicle's electronics? Thanks
Reply:This is a dispute that is common. One person says disconnect the battery the other says it doesn't matter. I have welded on trucks and left the battery hooked up and it was fine but whenever possible i like to just disconnect it. Better to be safe than risk a chance. Plus it only takes another 5 mins tops. I've welded on my dirt bikes and have never had a problem. I just grounded right to my part. if you ground to your part the electricity isn't going to run all through your bike to get back to the work clamp. It's going to take the path of least resistance. Reply:Wheter right or "doesn't matter" error on the safe side and disconnect.
